Names meaning happiness

SIL's middle name is Joy. She's only 26, so it's pretty unusual. She just got married and her usually very reserved dad, who barely ever expresses his feelings directly, gave the loveliest, loveliest speech about how they gave her the middle name because the moment she was born that's what she meant to him (and to her mum!), and she'd been a constant source of joy to everyone around her ever since, and he wished her joy in her new married life, etc. It was NOT as corny as that sounds. It was so beautiful.

Anyway, we're expecting DD2 and are a bit stuck on middle names. We have a few ideas but nothing I absolutely love. Inspired by this, though, I'm thinking about names that mean happiness. Joy has already been taken, obviously, and Felicity makes the first name (Alice) a bit fusty.

Anybody know of any other names meaning happiness? (And not kooky Hawaiian names, or anything - I am happy to go for something unusual, but not which sounds made up or bonkers if you're boring and English, like us!)

Blythe? Merry?

If you love Joy, why don't you use it? You could talk to your SIL and explain why you were so moved by her dad's speech...

This suggest Allegra, Beatrice and Hilary as 'happy' names.

Or you could have Gloria... due a comeback I think.

Sunnysummer · 14/06/2013 17:35

Felicity?

I knew a Joy when I was little who would now be a similar age

I think why not use Joy? It's your sis in laws middle name, not her first name so can't see any major issues, especially if you talk to her about it first

fussychica · 14/06/2013 18:28

I agree - talk to SIL, she'll probably be touched by your desire to use such a lovely name.
It was my dear mum's name so I'm biased.
Otherwise Alice (my fav girls name) goes beautifully with May or Grace which are both happy/serene names.DS would have been Alice May if he had been a DD.

I'm Felicity! My name means happiness :D

emsyj · 14/06/2013 21:45

My DSis is called Joy - we used it as a middle name for DD2. Just use Joy! It could do with being used a bit more often!

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit · 14/06/2013 22:20

Laetitia is Latin for happiness.

MERLYPUSS · 15/06/2013 11:13

Isaac means he who laughs

AnAirOfHope · 15/06/2013 18:46

I would use Happy as a mn or less hippy Marryn/Merry.

howcomes · 17/06/2013 04:50

Or how about Meri

llamallama · 17/06/2013 05:08

Abigail? It means father's joy or father's happiness

The Italian version Gioia (pronounced Joya) is rather splendid.
