Donovan as a name for a boy

It was my late mothers maiden name and I'd like to carry it on as a middle name perhaps. Has anyone heard it being used as a forename?

I think Noel Gallagher has one.

IfUSeekAmy · 10/06/2013 11:00

Yes I used to know someone called Donovan. I think it's a lovely name.

Christabel3 · 10/06/2013 11:03

As it's your mum's maiden name then I'll say yes, and, Grin because I love Donald and Don. Donald was on my list, but with intended nn of Don.

JazzAnnNonMouse · 10/06/2013 11:05

Jason is all I think of though

squoosh · 10/06/2013 11:06

And of course there's the singer Donovan.

Nice name

badtime · 10/06/2013 13:11

I thought of the singer Donovan as well - it was his given name (I think he was Scottish-born, and 'surname names' are more traditional there).

ImaginaryHat · 10/06/2013 14:50

My first thought was of former 100m world record holder Donovan Bailey. Uncommon but not unheard of I'd say, go for it.

Leeds2 · 10/06/2013 16:15

I like it, but I would use it as a middle name.

Snazzywaitingforsummer · 10/06/2013 16:19

I like it. Don't know any. It would be unusual without being wacky. I would go for it as first name. He can be Don or Donny for short.

babynelly2010 · 10/06/2013 19:54

Interesting, I did not know the mumsneters could be so hot and cold.
I asked about this name before, I think you would be interested to read my thread as well www.mumsnet.com/Talk/baby_names/a1717670-Donovan
I wonder why my post did not get many positive responses....

babynelly2010 · 10/06/2013 19:56

I wanted to say as many sorry :)

BikeRunSki · 10/06/2013 19:57

I love it! Hippy parents though ....

MacCrackles · 10/06/2013 20:11

Middle name with family connections: love it.

LentilAsAnything · 10/06/2013 20:40

I really like it. Do it!

LentilAsAnything · 10/06/2013 20:48

nelly, you got unlucky with the posters replying. Did you go for Donovan?

Turniptwirl · 10/06/2013 20:53

As a middle name for a maiden name it's ok, wouldn't use it as a first name though, partly because I think of Jason...

Snazzywaitingforsummer · 10/06/2013 21:39

nelly I was the last to post on that thread and actually it was that discussion that started me thinking that I really like Donovan as a name! Did you go for it? Hope either way you have found a name you are really happy with.

YonilyDevotedToYou · 10/06/2013 21:47

I teach one and I really like the name, although I would never give it as it reminds me too much of the boy I teach.

thepeanutsparent · 10/06/2013 21:53

Lovely name Smile

BrieMonster · 10/06/2013 22:08

I'm not hold and cold, I loved it then and I love it now. Really wondering if I can pull it off for my second now... Just a bit matchy with DS1. Hmm.

babynelly2010 · 10/06/2013 22:31

We haven't decided yet, the baby is due at the end of August. The name is on the list still. But some comments on that thread did turn me off a bit from the name, there were things said that I didn't even know about or considered...
I knew about the oasis singer's son but really don't know any real life Donovans. We were thinking nick name Van though not Don. Once we meet the baby we will know I suppose. With our DD we had 3 names in the order of preference and she ended up being the last one just because she just looked like it. We are taking a same approach with this one and Donovan is on the list. I think it is a lovely name, very strong, not sure if anyone mentioned yet but the meaning of Donovan is a "Dark Warrior", pretty cool :)

pleiadianpony · 10/06/2013 23:56

There was a musician in the 70's called Donovan. V boho and cool. Go for it.
