A middle name for a Conrad?

DC1 is due in October. Although we chose a girl's name really quickly and quite easily, as well as a back up just in case, we have really struggled with boys' names. We both have a lot of boys relatively close in our families and I feel very strongly that I don't want to re-use a family name.

We had idly discussed Conrad a little while ago, but today something has clicked and I am fairly keen on it - it's strong without being too blokish, classic but not really common and it goes well with our classic English "T" surname (think famous actresses called Emma...)

Has anyone got any suggestions for a middle name? To give you a flavour, the girls' names we have chosen are Beatrice Lydia or Claudia Elodie (in case she doesn't look like a Beatrice). The other boys names on the list are:

Edward - perfectly nice but perhaps a bit boring? Although I like all the nicknames
Frederick - DH likes, but I am not mad about Freddie
Hugo - I did love but slightly waning now and I think my family will snigger because its quite posh
George - a bit like Edward

Names that at out for family reasons:

David
Andrew
Thomas
James
Jeremy
Jonathan
John
Ian
William
Henry

Are you beginning to see the difficulty we're having?! Grin

If it's for a middle name, then just pick something you like.

Conrad Edward T..... sounds perfectly lovely.

There is no need to overthink it.

I love the name Conrad. How about:
Conrad Antonius
Conrad Sebastian

Tigglettchic · 05/06/2013 20:48

I love Conrad James, Sounds important but also strong!

ComtessedeFrouFrou · 05/06/2013 20:51

Thanks for your suggestions so far. DH loathes Sebastian, so that's out. Actually, that's part of the problem. I have to keep randomly suggesting names for his approval which he then dismisses with a sneer but won't make any of his own suggestions Hmm

James is my nephew's middle name, so I'd prefer to steer clear of that.

Conrad Alistair
Conrad Laurence
Conrad Benedict
Conrad Felix
Conrad Theodore

ComtessedeFrouFrou · 05/06/2013 21:32

I like Theodore but, yet again, DH doesn't. Sigh.

I have no helpful middle name suggestions (ours were only ever after family members) but just wanted to chip in that Conrad is a brilliant name!

ComtessedeFrouFrou · 05/06/2013 21:57

Thank you birdofthenorth it does seem rather like a stroke of genius Smile

The more I think about it, the more I love it Smile

I like MortifiedAdams suggestion of Conrad Scott.

ZolaBuddleia · 05/06/2013 22:01

Middle names are pointless IMO, but I wanted to pop in and say how blooming marvellous Conrad is.

ComtessedeFrouFrou · 05/06/2013 22:09

Glad to hear you all like it.

Zola are you biased, by any chance? Wink

I'm afraid I don't like Conrad Scott. Felix and Alistair are also out on family/close friends grounds. Conrad Edward doesn't really sound quite right to me. Too many -ud sounds together I think.

I could live with Conrad Hugo I suppose, but that might just be too many slightly quirky names?

Has your dh got a middle name - could you use that?

ZolaBuddleia · 05/06/2013 22:17

No, I don't know a single one, just think it's a fab name.

For middle names (if you must Wink), how about:
Jeremy
Robin
Charles
Marcus
Seth
William
Samuel
Elijah
Christopher

DizzyPurple · 05/06/2013 22:18

Joseph or Peter

Ohmydarlin · 05/06/2013 22:43

Conrad Nicholas

ComtessedeFrouFrou · 06/06/2013 07:54

What do we think of Conrad George T...?

Middle names never get used, so choose a name you love or one that honours a family member. Both of our kids have their grandparent's first names as middle names.

BlueChampagne · 06/06/2013 13:03

Middle names are there in case the child has a violent aversion to their first name. One members of my family and one of DH's have taken the middle name option.

Conrad Marcus

soontobeslendergirl · 06/06/2013 16:09

Hmmm - I think originally middle names were there to differentiate between people with the same first and last name. i.e. John Alan Smith not John David Smith etc. Sometimes people would use them instead of the first name to stop form being little/young John rather than old John or Big John etc.

Nowadays when people tend not to name children after their parent/grandparent and we use a wider choice of names than previously, I don't think that matters so much.

So, unless you want to honour a family member then usually you would just pick another name you like.

George is on your back up list, you both like it, it sounds nice with Conrad so i'd go for it and not stress about it. You will call him Conrad and never really bother with the middle name.
