Is Jack chavvy?

I really love the name Jack and have done for years. I am 30 weeks pregnant and thought we had the boys name sorted (Elodie Eve or Isabelle Rose for a girl) as DH also loved it but he has announced that a bloke at work who is a "complete chav" has called his son Jack and that has totally put him off the name and he isn't sure anymore. He is now advocating Jacob instead. I think Jack is a lovely old fashioned name and ties in well with our farming background. I know it's really popular but I don't care. How can I get him to stop worrying about other people? Or have you changed your planned DC name after hearing it used by someone else? He never socialises with this bloke and is based at a totally different location at work!

No, I wouldn't say so.

I think that it's just a very popular name used across all sections of society.

Tickledyellow · 29/05/2013 19:49

Not chavvy. Just a lovely, classic name but as miffed said used by all. Try and convince him to use Jack!

Tickledyellow · 29/05/2013 19:50

Miffy not miffed! Lol

rockybalboa · 29/05/2013 19:50

What the poster said above. It's not chavvy, just very very popular.

Bowlersarm · 29/05/2013 19:54

Not chavvy. Just loads around.

seeker · 29/05/2013 19:57

It's quit popular- although I don't know any baby Jacks. It it's a traditional nickname for John, which is very unusual nowadays. How about John?

heidihole · 29/05/2013 19:58

Not chavvy. Just popular that's the only reason it's been used also by the chav at work!

EugenesAxe · 29/05/2013 19:58

Not really in my opinion; it is obviously popular though. I think the mega popular names like Archie and Alfie are more chavvy TBH.

Shit that's what everyone has said... I guess having a groundswell of similar opinion isn't a bad thing though.

Southeastdweller · 29/05/2013 19:59

Not really but very common these days. Jacob better (speaking as someone with an underused name even now).

Tickledyellow · 29/05/2013 20:01

This could be a locality thing. Jacob is uber popular in our area. I know five Jacobs under nine years of age but only one toddler Jack.

ktp693 · 29/05/2013 20:39

Every Jack I know is from a good background.

Fairylea · 29/05/2013 20:42

Not chavvy. Just popular. Nice name though. :)

Pleasecansomeonereply · 29/05/2013 20:55

Not chavvy at all. Agree with poster above who mentioned Archie/Alfie.

I have a Jack.. always loved it. one or two folk have tried to call him Jackie. I think the stare said it all!

Lovely gentle name (I think).

All the best for the rest of your pregnancy and beyond

Frikadellen · 29/05/2013 21:24

Not chavy no just overused and imo dull.

Jacob is nice.

Hummuschocolate · 29/05/2013 21:45

Definitely not chavvy. Classic, lovely name. Quite popular, I like the idea of using John as a longer version. I've known a variety of different Jacks in terms of ages etc, it suits lots of different people imo.

Fairylea · 29/05/2013 21:48

Dd has 4 Jacobs at her school..no jacks!

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 29/05/2013 21:51

I think Jack gets used by people from all backgrounds. I have a Jack, and he was one of six in his primary year group .

LittleMissLucy · 29/05/2013 21:57

Both Jack and Jacob are wildly over-used, you're likely if you call your DS Jacob, to encounter many others in the playground, some of whom you / your DH may even consider chavvy Hmm

Lebkuchenlover · 29/05/2013 22:07

As the name Jack has been THE most popular boys' name for a number of years it will likely be used by lots of people, including 'chavs' (whatever they are...).

TheCraicDealer · 29/05/2013 22:13

I agree with Seeker- John, nn Jack.

Alternatively you could get DP to watch a few episodes of 30 Rock with the amazing Alec Baldwin as Jack Donaghy. He will change his mind about it being chavvy!

ExcuseTypos · 29/05/2013 22:16

No it isn't. However it is very popular.

Last summer, dd aged 18 had some friend round. Out of 6 boys, 5 were called Jack. It got quite confusing.

youarewinning · 29/05/2013 22:19

I like Jack. But I prefer Jacob/ Jake. (jut personal opinion - no reason for it!)

The name thing being related to others is and becomes rediculous - both my parent teachers, I'm HLTA - if I avoided names because they were used by a certain child I'd been naming mine child A, child B etc

For every 1 'undesirable' Jack you meet you could meet 10 lovely ones.

effyzm · 29/05/2013 22:43

Not chavvy just really popular and is also slang for someone who is lazy or useless at their job. Confused

SilverBirdie · 29/05/2013 22:57

Not chavvy but there's no doubting there are a fair few around. Doesn't stop it being a fab, timeless name that will suit a baby, a teenager and an adult. There are a lot more Alfies, Finleys, Jacobs and Harrys at playgroups we go to.
Do you like Zack/Zachary?

Oldandcobwebby · 29/05/2013 22:57

But Jack isn't a proper name, only a diminutive of John. Why not name him John, and call him Jack as a nickname?
