Is Jack chavvy?

I really love the name Jack and have done for years. I am 30 weeks pregnant and thought we had the boys name sorted (Elodie Eve or Isabelle Rose for a girl) as DH also loved it but he has announced that a bloke at work who is a "complete chav" has called his son Jack and that has totally put him off the name and he isn't sure anymore. He is now advocating Jacob instead. I think Jack is a lovely old fashioned name and ties in well with our farming background. I know it's really popular but I don't care. How can I get him to stop worrying about other people? Or have you changed your planned DC name after hearing it used by someone else? He never socialises with this bloke and is based at a totally different location at work!

Snore. Do you want a child whose name makes folk go snore? Biscuit

mamaliv · 29/05/2013 23:21

I love Jacob, you could go with that and then nickname to Jack?

LittleMissLucy · 29/05/2013 23:33

Oldandcobwebby, that's completely ridiculous. Jack is a proper name and has been a name in its own right since the 18th Century. As is Tom. Its not just short for Thomas. Several other names, same thing, proper in their own right.

TigOldBitties · 30/05/2013 09:55

We have a Jack and are probably a little bit chavvy, whatever that means.

Jack is an Every Man name, like Tom or James, you can meet some posh ones and some not so posh ones.

My Jack is no longer a baby and I seem to god meeting fewer Jacks than before.

We usually call him Jackie (maybe that's our chav identifier).

ABirdInTheBush · 30/05/2013 11:39

Tell your DH to stop being so silly! People from all walks of life call their children all sorts of names.

Plonk him in the middle of a playground for a day and see if his opinion on Jacob changes - I bet there are just as many 'complete chavs' who have called their child Jacob!

Stick with Jack if that's what you want to do - it's a timeless classic.

If your DH stopped judging others, then maybe he would worry less about what the world thinks of him. Wink

It's not chavvy at all ... but... it is colloquial. So in that sense, it can, in some sense, lack, um, substance...

To me, it's a lovely boy's name. But it is a nickname. It doesn't quite past the test for me.

JojoMags · 30/05/2013 11:51

Agree not chavvy. Nice and used by everyone. Jack is a perfectly acceptable nn for Jacob, so you could both have your way.

fussychica · 30/05/2013 16:27

Great name - classic and strong, suits any age. Jacob also classic but rather softer. I'd go with Jack.

boardingschoolbaby · 30/05/2013 16:48

Not chavy at all, but in my experience Jack is always a naughty boys name- in a loveable rogue sort of way.

Lebkuchenlover · 30/05/2013 17:34

Surely it depends on the particular Jack you have in mind - there are so many of them out there....!

Justfornowitwilldo · 30/05/2013 17:48

The stats released last year that cover 2011 had

1 HARRY 7,523 +2
2 OLIVER 7,007 -1
3 JACK 6,844 -1
4 ALFIE 5,524 -
5 CHARLIE 5,516 -
6 THOMAS 5,353 -
7 JACOB 5,047 +5
8 JAMES 4,945 +2

So if those trends continued during 2012, Jacob could be more popular than Jack by now!

changechangechange · 30/05/2013 21:10

Oh no, imagine if you called your son Jack and people might think you were all just like those horrid uncouth plebby paupers.

I vote Jayden. Lol.

legallyblonde84 · 31/05/2013 09:15

Thank u for your feedback which was, for the most part, very helpful! I think we are sticking with Jack. Neither of us like John but thanks for the suggestion! I love Zach/Zachary as well. Will see what DC suits when we meet him/her Grin
As for the poster who doesn't know what a chav is......really?! Think Vicky Pollard and you are pretty much there.

I see you are sticking with Jack - great choice - and definitely not chavvy.

My DS1 (13) is Jack, so I used it at the height of its popularity, but he's still only one of three in his school. Well four if you count the boy who goes by Jack, but is actually a John!

LittleMissLucy · 31/05/2013 18:00

It is snobby and she should be free to comment on that. A lot of people have said the same thing, albeit indirectly and not been told to shove off.

thegreylady · 31/05/2013 18:36

Good heavens of course it isn't chavvy! It is very popular but its a strong timeless name.

JumpingJackSprat · 31/05/2013 19:39

Thanks littlemisslucy i thought i was going mad for a minute!!

hellokitty123 · 03/06/2013 13:13

I don't consider names chavvy/posh but rather people. So some Jacks may be, others won't be. What would put me off the name Jack, though, its widespread use - we have 4 Jacks in our Cub Scout group, two of which share the same surname!!

MummyPig24 · 04/06/2013 14:17

Much prefer Jack to Jacob. Both very popular though.

mymagaret · 04/06/2013 21:43

Why not Jacob and NN Jack? Its not unreasonable. That was our plan because i don't really like the sound of Jake. Jack is nearer Jacob than Jake in spelling anyway.
I don't know any Jacobs, and only 2 Jacks, one in his late 20's and very un-chavvy, and one is the cleverest and cutest 3 year old, i hope my son turns out half as lovely as him.

kerala · 04/06/2013 22:35

Baffled as to why anyone would opt for such an overused name that would put me right off

jessjessjess · 05/06/2013 10:18

I think Jack is a lovely name. Who cares if it's overused - if you love it, you love it.

ODearMe · 05/06/2013 11:47

Names are popular for a reason, because they are good strong timeless names.

I am offended anyone would suggest my son has a chavvy name. We didn't care at all how many other people chose Jack; we chose it because we loved it and goes perfectly with our surname.

Stop worrying what other people think and do what you want to do!
