Yes I think as a stand alone name. We're not Scottish so would feel weird using angus. The full version that springs to mind is augustus which I'm not too keen on.

Short for Augustus? My ski-ing instructor (get me!) in Bulgaria was called Augustan, would NOT let us shorten to Gus, as that means Arse in Bulgarian.

We had a Gus at school, he got called Gus the gorilla. He wasn't a very pleasant chap either.
