We are due in December so it is hardly urgent at the moment but I think I like the name Edgar - am I mad? I like Ed and Eddie but not too keen on Edward.
DP has only come up with horrendous comedy names so far (Street Fighter characters/ Star Trek characters etc) and it took us ages to name our cat so I am trying to start early :)

No....

Numberlock · 15/05/2013 21:05

I love Edgar! It has real character!

soontobeslendergirl · 15/05/2013 22:22

I like it :)

unebagpipe · 15/05/2013 22:33

No... Just reminds me of the creepy Edgar Alan Poe author we had to study at school!!!Shock

Decoy · 15/05/2013 22:46

It's a bit Eggy.... how about Edwin as an alternative?

blueshoes · 15/05/2013 22:52

EDAGR is the acronym for the securities database of the US SEC. But maybe that is a bit obscure to lose any sleep over ....

Earnshaw · 15/05/2013 22:53

Edmund?

MuntyCakes · 15/05/2013 23:08

I like Edgar! It's quite unusual though. Does it sound good with your surname? I think you're right to steer clear of Edward (though I quite like that too) - aren't there lots of those now because of Twilight? Edgar would actually have been on my list but was vetoed immediately!

MrsBungle · 15/05/2013 23:11

I know lots of people whose surname is Edgar.

MuntyCakes · 15/05/2013 23:11

Ooh, I was going to say Edmund! Wasn't he quite an evil character in the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe though? I can't remember it properly but I have a feeling he was...

(having said that, I do like Edmund too - I must just like names starting in 'Ed'! I'm not sure about Edwin though)

MissTweed · 16/05/2013 08:05

Edgar is a family name that everyone has as a middle name. I have always known it as a name that is hated (my parents never afflicted us with it which caused a massive family row) but has always caused sniggers at wedding etc when its read out.

My fear would be that Edgar is the kind of name which is kind of trendy now (the old fudge duddy trend) but in a few years when this trend has passed it will cause ridicule.

KittenofDoom · 16/05/2013 13:04

Edgar Davids, Dutch footballer. He's pretty cool.

GoodbyePorkPie · 16/05/2013 14:31

Edgar's great!

Catlike · 16/05/2013 14:35

Hmm I think it's the kind of name that would only be ok if you live in London or somewhere similar. I can't see it working well in a small town or in the sticks. He'd also need to be quite a strong, charismatic character to get away with it imo.

CremeEggThief · 16/05/2013 14:39

I know one who is now almost six. It grew on me...

hbmeic · 16/05/2013 15:19

Awful. Don't do it.

sleepingbeautiful · 16/05/2013 16:46

Don't like Edgar, it sounds unattractive when said loud.
Like Edward, Edwin/Edwyn and Edmund though. There's also Edison but that may be too 'American' sounding if you are UK.

oldspeckledtam · 16/05/2013 19:07

I have one. It's a brilliant, strong, name. I have never had a negative comment about it! It's so versatile too- endless nicknames! I'd say go for it, but I don't want it getting too popular.... Wink

Laquila · 16/05/2013 22:29

I like Edgar (and Edmund) and I love Edwin.

JojoMags · 16/05/2013 22:33

Prefer Edwin (in fact love this) and Edmund. Edgar is fine, just a bit sinister round the edges. Makes me think of ravens - Edgar Allen Poe and all that... Go for it if you love it. You can always shorten to Eddie if things start getting dark.

MissRabbitsCV · 16/05/2013 22:39

Love it. DS1 (3.3 yo) used to have an Edgar at nursery. I think it's a really strong name. Edgar at nursery was a little chunk. Smile

Theironfistofarkus · 16/05/2013 22:42

Please don't! It reminds me of rotten eggs!

miffybun73 · 16/05/2013 22:56

No. Sounds really effete/wimpy to me, whereas Edward sounds like a good strong name.

Just read MissRabbitsCV's post though so obviously not all Edgar's are like that in reality :)

pigletpower · 16/05/2013 22:58

It's bizzare that I absolutely adore names like Edgar,Edwin,Edmund etc but hate with a passion Eddie or Ed!

Cordial · 17/05/2013 05:39

I love Edgar, my DH nickname has been Edgar for so long that people think its his real name and often comment on how great it is! Go for it I say!
