Is Isla really that popular?

We love the name but really didnt want to pick a top 10 name. Just seeing if it really was that popular, do you know many babies with the name?

Can you suggest some alternatives?

Yes I know a toddler called Isla.

TheRealFellatio · 13/05/2013 19:15

And a dog. Hmm

PrincessOfChina · 13/05/2013 19:21

In my experience it depends where you are geographically. None here in West Midlands, but bazillions (5 off top of my head) at home in the North.

AlmondFrangipani · 13/05/2013 19:27

We live in the South West and I have heard of 1 newborn so far...but I am 28 weeks pregnant and havent got any other children so probably not the best judge on its popularity!

I know 5! Mostly in south, one in Scotland.

TheRealFellatio · 13/05/2013 19:31

But I must say that although I know only one, I am old and most of my friends children are much older now. I am aware that it is a very popular name lately.

5madthings · 13/05/2013 19:37

I know three, i am.in the south east.

You can look at the name statistics for your area if you look at the national.statistics they have a bit for different geographical areas or go to some toddler groups or hang out at your local park to see how often you hear it!

sleepingbeautiful · 13/05/2013 19:48

The baby girl names I have come across most in recent months from UK friends are Isla, Amelie, Cara and Ava. This is annoying because my DD is one of these, and we are currently living overseas so I had no idea it was so popular back home, I thought everyone was still on Isabelle/Emily/Olivia.

TallulahBetty · 13/05/2013 19:50

I know 10, of varying ages. West Mids.

PoppyWearer · 13/05/2013 19:56

Two or three in DS's nursery class (and he has a very popular name himself).

VisualiseAHorse · 13/05/2013 20:01

I love it, and know a couple.

Sadly, we can't use it. Our surname is the name of an island (let's say...Wight). So her name would sound like Isle of Wight. Not good.

Decoy · 13/05/2013 20:08

I think it may be a bit faddy, because it was rarely heard as a baby name several years ago but now it's suggested on every other thread here. Having said that, I don't know any baby Islas (probably don't live in the right place!)

MrsApplepants · 13/05/2013 20:13

I know 5 Islas and I'm in the south east. It is on a par with Isabelle round here!

CruCru · 13/05/2013 20:33

I'm in London and have met quite a few.

Noggie · 13/05/2013 20:38

I am in Scotland and it is quite popular. Know 3 that we meet regularly x

farmersdaughter · 13/05/2013 21:03

I know 1, aged 3.

Love the name, sadly my Dad called our dog Isla back in the 80's!

ShadowStorm · 13/05/2013 21:30

I know 3 under school age.

00anais00 · 13/05/2013 21:41

i know 2 born in the last two years (not too popular) alternitives- lola, ava, lelia, iris, ella, elodie, anais (my daughters name :)

pinkr · 13/05/2013 22:24

If it is on the top ten then it must be popular surely?

GetmemyPassport · 13/05/2013 22:26

Yes, I know 3. All under 3.

gwenniebee · 13/05/2013 22:30

I know five all under 14 months. Seems to be extremely popular round here at the moment (East of England...)

Pinkflipflop · 13/05/2013 22:56

It's a gorgeous name!

I don't know any and I'm a primary teacher!

If you love it, use itGrin

I know 1, but spelt weirdly differently.

squoosh · 14/05/2013 00:49

It's definitely a very popular name at the moment.

I'm not a massive fan.
