What names have you heard recently to make you stop in your tracks and wonder if the parents are a bit mad?

My most recent favourite is... Flossy, for a girl.
Made worse because my dads pet name for me is Flossy, or Floss. So to hear it as an ACTUAL name just makes me gawp.

Worst boys name - Banjo.

The apostrophe is an indulgence too, Mortified, is it not Grin

They are obviously unconcerned by the Alistair Crowley-esque fact that things spelled or chanted backwards mean the opposite of the original meaning. OoooOOOoooh!

cuillereasoupe · 15/05/2013 15:33

Jezebel is quite cool if you think of it in terms of reclaiming strong women done down by the patriarchy.

Catlike · 15/05/2013 19:37

I met a baby called Fry recently. Different.

I thought I heard a man calling his little girl Fryer recently but then realised it was actually Freya and I'd just been confused by his accent Blush

williaminajetfighter · 15/05/2013 20:49

Can confirm there is a Pocahontas in Glasgow as midwife told me.

And there really are twins called Dolce & Gabanna. Dear god.

SparkleToffee · 16/05/2013 10:19

My Sister went to school with a boy called Huckleberry......
Where I love dome people love a strange name.
Met a little boy called Oberon once

ShowOfHands · 16/05/2013 10:31

Some of these names are lovely and I considered them myself (Django, Bram, Cosmo, Merlin etc). We have lots of Willoughbys in our family too (going back hundreds of years).

Somebody I know has recently called her newborn baby girl Khaleesi. It's not even Daenerys which I could have understood. Still, her baby, her choice or whatever platitude it is I'm supposed to insert here.

Choccyjules · 16/05/2013 10:33

Cartel.

I thought this was the word for dodgy gangs involved in gambling, drugs etc?

Craftycat3 · 16/05/2013 10:41

Read an article about a woman who named her children after perfume - with one being called DKNY pronounced 'Dikini'....

No words.

xigris · 16/05/2013 10:54

I read that too Crafty! I think it was in Take a Break. It was an article about a woman who spent about £40,000 a year on clothes, toys etc for her (loads of) children. Smile

Biscuit15 · 16/05/2013 10:58

The worst I've ever heard is always in Glasgow (from where I originate) so far I've heard " Right, Armani, if ye don't eat yer chips yer no gettin' any ice-cream!" " Mercedes McGonnagle, get aff that wa' (wall) noo!" and my all time favourite called out to a toddler who was trying to climb up the stairs on a double-decker bus "Pocahontas! Get back down here right now!" You've got to laugh!

Craftycat3 · 16/05/2013 11:00

haha glad you saw it too xigris - I couldn't remember where I saw it and was starting to think maybe I'd hallucinated it, it's so bonkers.

I also went to school with twins called Bubbles and Pebbles, and they had an older sister called Cleopatra. Unusual for sure.

Craftycat3 · 16/05/2013 11:03

Oh! Just thought of some others - again from a trashy magazine article :D

Cubby Bear (Boy) and Bunny Love (Girl).

tasmaniandevilchaser · 16/05/2013 11:07

macjesus! I am crying here! That has GOT to be the winner!

Some of these are very ordinary to me, clearly many MNetters don't live in London!

photographerlady · 16/05/2013 11:11

friend named her daughter Sta-Lyn. Yes it is pronounced just the same as Stalin and no she doesn't no much about murderous dictators and I don't think anyone will say anything.

tasmaniandevilchaser · 16/05/2013 11:16

o.m.g. sta-lyn. Words fail me. I think Macjesus might be overtaken there.

Biscuit15 · 16/05/2013 11:18

McJesus wins hands down! Although Jesus (pron Jayzoo) is a very common name in some parts of the world (ie very catholic parts) to make it different by prefixing it with Mc is just pure genius!

fluffymindy · 16/05/2013 11:29

A friend of mine lived next door to a girl with two sons: Jaiden-Jay and Armani-blu................ awful awful awful (and my children have unusual names too)

McJesus is the winner though

NoMoreMarbles · 16/05/2013 11:42

A friend's DD recently had a baby girl and called her Je'Taime...

I boggled a bit at that!Smile

There's a boy called Dax and a girl called D'asher (pronounced dasher so don't get the apostrophe!) in DDs school aas well

imaginethat · 16/05/2013 11:54

To everyone ridiculing Banjo, it is not an uncommon name in Australia, v popular in Aboriginal communities and also the name of a famous poet Banjo Paterson.

In fact many of the names mentioned in this thread are not weird or crazy, but simply have their origins in another culture.

Choccyhobnob · 16/05/2013 12:21

A woman I work with has a granddaughter is called Minnie. I can see it being cute on a tiny baby/toddler I think I'd hate to be called it as an adult (although I suppose there is Minnie Driver...) either way it made me go Hmm

AmandaPayneNeedsANap · 16/05/2013 12:38

Minnie Driver is a nickname though. Minnie and Lorri Driver.

Choccyhobnob · 16/05/2013 12:48

Thanks AmandaPayne Just googled and turns out Minnie Driver's name is Amelia Fiona so that just reaffirms my opinion that it is not a suitable name to put on a birth certificate.

squoosh · 16/05/2013 13:01

I know a Minnie who is a Minnie on the birth cert.

Awful.

squoosh · 16/05/2013 13:02

What if they're tall and not so slender? It's too cruel.

NorbertDentressangle · 16/05/2013 13:04

ROFL at Bunny Love Grin

It sounds like some bizarre sex addiction.
