Shortlist for a girl - Help

entertumbleweed · 23/04/2013 11:23

We're expecting our first baby in early September and are having a girl.

We're trying to narrow down our shortlist to three or four then will probably see what suits best when she arrives. Unless one really starts to stand out....

Current shortlist that we both agree on is

Caitlyn
Caris/Carris (not sure on spelling)
Hannah
Jessica
Macey
Martha
Sylvie

Any thoughts welcome - Happy to consider others though as there are no definite front runners at the moment.

I really like Caitlyn, Hannah, Jessica and Sylvie. Martha is ok but not as nice, and I don't really like Carris. I think Macey sounds a bit trashy, sorry!

PoppyWearer · 23/04/2013 11:57

Also not a big fan of Macey, the rest are all nice though.

"Charis" is the spelling I know.

notallytuts · 23/04/2013 12:04

i like caitlyn and carris, but i would spell them Caitlin and Carys!

xyla · 23/04/2013 12:10

What about Maisie rather than Macey?

smother · 23/04/2013 12:18

or Marcie?

I like all your names! my fav would be Sylvie, Carys (I prefer it spelt this way - also like Cerys and Clarice), Martha and Caitlin.

Michellephant · 23/04/2013 14:15

I prefer Carys rather than the spellings you have said. I also like Jessica.

thermalsinapril · 23/04/2013 14:47

I like Carys, Hannah and Jessica.

pygmy · 23/04/2013 14:50

Martha or Sylvie.

MummyBurrows · 23/04/2013 15:12

I like Jessica and Hannah. I agree with the others though,I'd spell Carris Carys x

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/04/2013 18:18

Macey is horrible. Martha is my favourite, followed by Hannah and Sylvie.

picnicbasketcase · 23/04/2013 18:21

Jessica, Hannah or Caitlyn. I don't like Macey or Carys. Sylvie and Martha are okay.

Hazelbrowneyes · 23/04/2013 18:22

Jessica
Hannah
Caitlin
Carys

are the only ones I like from your list (in that order too)

pregnantpause · 23/04/2013 18:38

Caitlyn
Jessica
Carys
Sylvie (of which I have not met one, it's unusual to me, I like it)

Macey is a bit common in my area and not amongst nice children. I don't know why.

I knew a Martha at school, nicknamed martyr Martha, so not for me.

I like Hannah but the reality is in five years time some little so and so will shorten it to han(!) And that would grate.Grin

Wow thanks for all the replies. It's actually really useful to see the preferred spellings as well!!

Carys I have only ever heard spoke so wasn't sure on spelling.

One of the things I wonder about is whether or not it's better to go for a name that she won't need to spell all the time due to all the variations (or correct the spelling of) so that's what I wondered about Caitlyn?
Does it get a pain always having to spell your name!?

I think you are all probably right on Macy. It's coming off the list!!

I think she will probably be quite tall and I wonder if Martha might be a bit of a clumsy name and suit a petite person better.

It feels like quite a responsibility!

Caitlin, Cerys and Martha were on our shortlist!

We also had Bethan, Anna, Carla/Cara/Cora, Georgia, Kirsten and Matilda.

thermalsinapril · 23/04/2013 20:49

If you like Macy, how about Lucy or Lacey?

Twinklestarstwinklestars · 23/04/2013 20:54

We are having dc3 in July and my favourite girls names are Elsie and Amelie.

I love Sylvie! It is beautiful. That would have been dc2s name but didn't think it would suit a boy!!

xyla · 24/04/2013 12:16

I always have to spell my name, and it is definitely a pain. I suppose it might be different if it were an unusual name, but my name is boring/ugly and it's just a minor spelling difference - along the lines of Ann vs. Anne (although those are lovely names). But...I suppose there are not that many names (especially girls' names) that only have one spelling variant, so maybe it's unavoidable.

TenthMuse · 24/04/2013 13:03

Martha or Sylvie by far the nicest - both lovely. Hannah OK. Dislike Macey and Caitlin.

TheRealFellatio · 24/04/2013 13:06

I think it's usually spelt Carys.

I love Sylvie, like Carys, not wild about the rest.

Thewhingingdefective · 24/04/2013 13:11

Sylvie or Carys - both beautiful!

Not Macey!
