Sebastian?

Hi all,

What do you think of the name Sebastian... combined with a surname that is also four syllables and ends in 'ian'? .a..e.ian

I am afraid it sounds a bit silly with the surname, but it is the only name on its own that neither DH nor I have vetoed so far! The name hunting business is complicated by the fact that I have ties to three separate countries and he has origins from three completely different ones... ideally the boy would have one international name and one 'ethnic' name but the latter is complicated by the fact that we have so many nationalities to acknowledge. And we haven't found another international name we'd both like so far! (Daniel, David, Peter, Robert all out...)

I personally think it sounds a bit silly having a first name that will essentially rhyme with ur surname but its ur choice.

Perhaps go for something that u both genuinely like rather than worrying about whether its "international" enough to keep all sides of the family happy? After he's ur baby and ur the ones that will see him everyday and live with the name on a daily basis,not family members dotted around the world....just a thought....xx

Thanks for the honest opinion, Burrows! We are not looking for an international name to please family. It's more to make the child's life easier given that we are such vagabond mutts.

Also, DH hates every single ethnic name that I have suggested to him, and doesn't have any of his own to propose. He even dislikes Matthias on the grounds that it sounds too German (and one of his countries is Germany)! I don't associate it with Germany, but whatever.

Alexander is lovely but 3/4 of my male friends have that name... I also like Dominic a lot, but again, it is very common in my circle and I am not too keen on the nn Dom. Benedict is another personal favourite, but DH kept a spider (!) called Ben...

Hope u didn't think I was being rude,I didn't mean it in that way,I just wanted to b honest...FWIW I do actually like the name Sebastian,no problems with it,I personally just don't like names that rhyme! Hence why if my second DC is a girl I refuse to call her Zoe as my DD is called Chloe! Not many names rhyme with my surname so I've not had to worry there...

Ur partner sounds a lot like mine,happy to say no to pretty much every name u come up with bt can't offer anything himself lol!

How about Matthew as aposed to Matthias? That's a pretty universal name,or John/Johnathan? I'm just throwing names out there,uve probably already considered them!xx

Adam - strong, short and timeless

Burrows, no, I really do appreciate the honest feedback. And on one level I agree with you, as I added in the original post I was worried the rhyming name might sound silly.

Fussychica, Adam has occurred to me as well and would fit the bill, though I haven't raised it with DH yet. The reason I am hesitating is that one of my good friends has named his son Adam, and probably more importantly, someone I work with very closely in a charity has just lost her own 11-year old Adam - I am not sure if it would hurt her if we used that name (not that it is owned by them, but you know what I mean).

If Dad doesn't veto it, then ask the bereaved mother if she would mind. It might please her rather than hurt her, could go either way.

What are your 6 countries? Guessing Armenia is one.

Yes Armenia is one :) the rest cover Southern, Eastern, Central and Western Europe according to the way I learnt geograpy, or Eastern and Western Europe according to my fully British erstwhile schoolmates.

ETA: make that geography with a 'ph'...

I really love Sebastian for a name.

Sebastian is really nice, nn Seb, Sebby, Bastion (wasn't that the name of the boy in the 80s film Dark Chrystal-or-something? He rode a big flying dg). I really like Bastion.

Adam is a great name, too, I have two nephews called that (one on DH's side of family).

...all names that also exist in other countries (except maye Brian?) At least not difficult to pronounce! I've always liked Anders, Sven Stellan. Born in the wrong country, I think!

I adore William too, but not its equivalents in our other languages. Gosh we are probably too picky!

I like Sebastian a lot and Seb as short form. If you like Adam then how about Atom instead as per famous Armenian-Canadian film director, Atom Egoyan?

I quite like Sebastian but really dislike the nicknames Seb/Sebby/Basty and I also don't think that your surname goes that well with it.

Sebastian is a good proper masculine name if you like it that's all that matters :)
The only thing I would do is avoid names on the most hated list lol

DH thinks Adam is boring.

He has also just returned from a trip that included visiting Durham cathedral, and told me that he has a list of potential names for our son. I said, "Let me guess, Cuthbert?"

Not only did he put Cuthbert on the list... the rest of it is composed of Aldhun, Ethelric, Absolom, Turgot, Algos and Alwyn.

I think he might have been serious. So to be on the safe side I told him that will be a big fat NO. LOL!

If he carries on like this I am going to start plumping for Attila :)
