The name Arthur?

Just a light-hearted question really! DH and I have a 12 week old son called Arthur. When we picked it, we thought it was not particularly common, and were hoping that he'd be the only one in his class etc (not that it matters really, we just thought that it was a fairly uncommon name!). Anyway, since he has been born, I have known of no less than THREE other Arthurs who have been born! (Only to friends of friends, but three is quite a lot!)

Has this name suddenly increased in popularity, or were DH and I naive in thinking that it wasn't particularly popular at the moment?! Do you know many Arthurs?!

As I said, not that it matters, we still love his name, but I just wondered!

I know a 25 year old Arthur and a seven month old one.

We liked it for ds but went with another similar name and in end both names round here are v popular
I've come to conclusion that any older or trad boys names are going to be popular because they're fab names

A friend of a friend has a 2 year old Arthur. I have not met any other little Arthurs but I think it is becoming popular these days.

My ds has a very popular name and I did not realize how popular it was until after he was born. He is 4 now and l still love his name.

Yes, older traditional names certainly are fab sleepdodger! I love them all! I'm trying to persuade DH that if we have any more DS's then we should call one of them Sidney...but he is yet to be convinced!

oops, just realised it is an Archie I know of not an Arthur. So I have not met any little Arthurs.

Sidney is a great name. I hope you manage to convince your DH!

Arthur all going well. Several people have said "oh, I know a little Arthur born recently" so yes, I'd say it's about to take a hike in popularity, but it's a lovely name and you can't always predict these things. DN is an Ethan which leapt dramatically in popularity but it suits him to the ground and SIL still loves it. If you google the Dark Greener Names website you can see that Arthur is on the rise but was still only the 82nd most popular name in 2010 so whilst it might have leapt up in the last couple of years it's unlikely to be top 5 anytime yet.

How many are in his class however is just down to pure luck I'm afraid... DD was one of only 4 babies named her name in 2010 and it turns out one of the others lives in the same town!!

Anything from your grandparents generation is v popular right now. I also know lots of Arthur's but really like the name.

I know one who is coming up to 1. I think it's still a bit unusual, but within a few of years there will be one in most schools.

I love it. I wanted it as DS2's middle name but he is called Felix and a friend pointed out that it would be two brands of cat food. That put me off, somewhat.

Good name. I know two Arthurs. One is about 50 and the other about 8.

I haven't heard the name for years apart from somebody's great uncle and all of a sudden there seems to be quite a few of them. But if you like the name does it really matter that much. But I think it's extremely unlikely there is going to be half a dozen other Arthurs in his class!

It's been slower to take off than some old-fashioned names of the same generation, which surprises me because I think it has much more class than some. I mean, King Arthur!!!

It also puzzles me that people are favouring Alfie over Alfred. Like, a puppy's name over the only king who is known as The Great. Shocking.

I know, there were about a dozen Alfies when I had my DS back in 2006. All I could think was "this is the name for a pet!"

My ds is 13 weeks and we have had the same thing, chose the name William knew it was classic but don't know any baby Williams and since he's been born I know of about 4 other baby's born at the same time also called William! I think you just pay more attention and notice it more! Arthur is a lovely name and was on our short list also! :)

It's probably getting more popular now the memory of the Eastenders character has faded a bit.

I know two Arthurs.

One is aged 4 and is known as Artie (cute).

The other is my uncle, who is 90 and utterly adorable.

I know one Arthur well

He is nearly 14 and I believe knows no others and likes the fact that he is the only one in school etc.

There is one in DS2's school, I think maybe about 7yo. Otherwise I don't know any - but I believe it is becomign more popular. It's a great name tho and will never be Josh/Joe/Jordan/Jake so I wouldn't worry.

I know two, the first surprised me. The second not so much. Think it may have made a teensy leap in the ONS stats this year.

I know of only 2 Arthurs, one is 19 one is 2 :-)
