Mabel?

I kind of like it...my beloved grandmother was Melba and I like that it has the same letters.

What are your thoughts?

I'm due in May and don't really love any girls' names yet...our front runner so far is Margaret with Maggie as a nickname. We already have a Sam.

I love Mable (my nans mn) Or Mabel....either way, just lovely Grin

BunnyLebowski · 20/03/2013 20:48

Mabel is gorgeous. 100% yes from me.

janie2 · 20/03/2013 20:48

Like it! Know a little girl called Mabel (she lives in Germany) and it also reminds me of a poem my grandma had in her bathroom by Lucie-Mabel Attwell :-)

cupcake78 · 20/03/2013 20:48

I love Mabel! I'm in the middle of trying to persuade dh that's its great Grin

pansyflimflam · 20/03/2013 20:50

Eww no. Put the pregnancy hormones down and walk away please. Maggie on the other hand is a winner

Myliferocks · 20/03/2013 20:53

My DS2 is 8 and he goes to school with a Mabel

soontobeslendergirl · 20/03/2013 20:55

I really like it. I like Margaret too and it does have a bigger choice of diminutives but then I don't think Mabel really needs any.

If pushed I'd go for Mabel

Sam and Mabel?
or
Sam and Maggie?

Think Mabel goes better as the "a" is pronounced differently whereas in Maggie (or Margaret) iy is pronounced the same. Although I do like Rita or Meg instead :)

StellaNova · 20/03/2013 20:58

I know a 5 year old Mabel. It's pretty and so is she. And there's the "may" sound for being born in May. I might be overthinking this!

CheerfulYank · 20/03/2013 20:59

:o Pansy. I also like Chrysanthemum with Xanthe as a nn, but that I think really is hormones.

I just think Mabel is sweet...DH probably won't agree! We both really do like Maggie, but it was the name of SIL's dog that died a few years ago, as well as one of my childhood dogs, so that's a sticking point.

I think Mabel is sweet too. Also like Esme and Margot. Other faves are Nancy and Miriam...I have 3 DCs so wishful thinking now!

LeslieWink1e · 20/03/2013 21:29

I love Mabel. Dauphin, you have my taste. Can I add Meryl to your list? Or is that a step too far !? Personally I like it. So many names are neglected.

LeslieWink1e · 20/03/2013 21:33

cheerfulyank that is pregnancy hormones! I like Magnolia and Dahlia when I was pregnant and whilst there are crazier names out there, and Magnolia could be Maggie for short (which I still love), Dahlia is a little fanciful for my non-hormonal state, which would be ........ for the rest of my life now! Smile

My Mum's dogs had lovely names btw, and they kept popping into my head when I was prg. I think it was because dogs were small cute but needy creatures that need care, and a baby .... well, need I finish that?

TheBuskersDog · 20/03/2013 21:34

My friend has just named her pug puppy Mabel.

olivertheoctopus · 20/03/2013 21:34

Mabel is brilliant!!

LeslieWink1e · 20/03/2013 21:34

I mean Chyrsanthenum btw. Your other choices are lovely.

Bambi86 · 20/03/2013 21:36

Love it!

sunnysunnyshine · 20/03/2013 21:36

Mabel's lovely.

mejon · 20/03/2013 21:42

Lovely. I have a Welsh Mabel - Mabli - and she's lovely too Grin.

birdofthenorth · 20/03/2013 22:12

Love love love it. The rest of the world may be less keen than Mumsnet at first. They are wrong Smile

BeeBopDingALing · 21/03/2013 00:02

Mabel is a horrible old lady name. Maggie is really nice, sweet but quirky without being weird.

Greenshootsandleeves · 21/03/2013 00:12

I prefer the more whimsical version Maybelle Blush

I HATE Maggie. Horrible.

OohShinyChocolateHollowBunnies · 21/03/2013 00:21

Mabel was my second choice of girls name. Maggie is lovely too though.

louisianablue2000 · 21/03/2013 00:24

Mabel good, and Margaret, but not so keen on Maggie.

MerryMingeWhingesAgain · 21/03/2013 00:30

Love Mabel. DH vetoed it though and DS turned out to be a DS so we didn't pursue it. Mabel and Penelope (not together obv) remain my shortlist names for the DC3 we won't have!

ripsishere · 21/03/2013 01:07

Noooooo. It's awful IMO. Maggie or Peggy are great. Specially Peggy.
