Pron- Meh-reh-win.

It's old English and I love it.
it gives the nick name options of Winnie or Merry.
Its at the very top of my crazy long girls list.
Siblings are Skye and Arlo,do you think it's too long a name compared to theirs?
Any other thoughts?

I like it, but can foresee huge issues with pronunciation and spelling in the future.

Cakethrow · 12/03/2013 16:45

I like it but I'm not sure it fits with the other DC's names.

BeeBopDingALing · 12/03/2013 17:05

I'm not keen on it tbh. I would think it was poronounced Merry-when. It sounds a bit Welsh to me (not a bad thing) but doesn't really seem to fit with your other DC's.

What about Rowena, Roanne, Lola, Piper, Alexis, Zoe, Teagan, Anya.

BeeBopDingALing · 12/03/2013 17:06

*Pronounced even.

Startail · 12/03/2013 17:10

It does sound very Welsh, similar to a Welsh colleague of my sisters.

FriggFRIGGisPoorlySick · 12/03/2013 17:20

Im not a fan of any of those names, and tbh I have enough on the list already Wink

Interesting perceptions though...merry-when sounds very close to meh-reh-win,well to me anyway.I think there is a similar welsh name spelled Mairwen and pronounced mare-wen.
Merewen is from the old English name Maerwynn though,so it does have different origins.

I must admit I'm not a fan of those names either but they seemed in the same realm as Skye & Arlo.

What other names do you have on your list?

Your shortlist is eclectic but I love loads of the names!

Merewen is a lovely name. I love Nell too.

Oisin and Taliesin are fab boys name - might be a bit biased though Smile

FriggFRIGGisPoorlySick · 12/03/2013 20:25

Yes,I know DP and I have taste poles apart (poll's apart? Hmm) so the names are never all going to fit together neatly,I just don't want them to seem utterly ridiculous together.
Skye was his choice, and Arlo mine,I'd have named Dd Matilda (her mn) and he'd have named DS Phoenix (his mn)

I'm glad you like Merewen, because I'm completely in love with it!
My favourites for the boys flit about a lot and I love them all,but I particularly like Barnaby (nn bear Grin ) taliesin,Oisin and Fabian ATM.

I love it, does indeed feel very ye olde Englishe.

ZolaBuddleia · 12/03/2013 20:28

And your list has made me want to have lots and lots of babies. Grin

FriggFRIGGisPoorlySick · 12/03/2013 20:29
Grin

It makes me want to have lots of babies too!
Or at least get to name lots of other people's babies Grin

Really like these. They seem more modern whereas some of the others were a bit old lady. Not sure an old lady name would sit well alongside Arlo & Skye.

Clara
Clementine
Vita
Sukie
Tabitha
Juniper
Pippa
Paloma

Also really like some of your boy choices, although not sure about Fabian with Arlo & Skye. If he had Fabe as a nn that wuld go well.

Fabian
Jude
Kit
Soren - This is brilliant, just love this name.
Rudi

CheeseStrawWars · 12/03/2013 20:37

Merewin also gives the nickname of "Mare" - which would kill it for me, personally.

mumat39 · 12/03/2013 20:39

How about Anwen? I love that name and it's sort of similar. I know an Anwen, who is just the loveliest young lady.

It's so hard choosing the name. It's ood that you've go so many to choose from. Good Luck.

FriggFRIGGisPoorlySick · 12/03/2013 20:42

Doesn't kill it for me at all.
I like horses Wink

She'd either be Merry or Winnie for short.
there aren't many children who use the term 'mare' in a derogative fashion, and I'd hope adults wouldn't tease her...

FriggFRIGGisPoorlySick · 12/03/2013 20:43

Thankyou Mumat that is a lovely name, but I'm trying not to double up the DC's initials...

mumat39 · 12/03/2013 20:52

I forgot to say, Merewen is such a lovely name too. If you shorten it before any one else does to Winnie or Merrie, that's what she'll be known as.

I just googled it and it has a lovely meaning too.

"Best Answer - Chosen by Voters

"So Merewen comes from the medieval from Maerwyn, meaning Maer: who illuminates; Wynn: friend, fair, white. Origin: old english/welsh and it's pronouced MARE-win"

Sounds really lovely, but I love names with meanings.

All the names on your list are lovely and when you meet you'll know which is the right one.

Xxx

FriggFRIGGisPoorlySick · 12/03/2013 21:00

Yes,I love the meaning too.
Gosh I really do love it....I reckon she'd be Winnie mostly.

What do you think of Merewen Sukie Mable sir-name?

Bit long perhaps?two family names in there, that I also happen to love!

OP posts:
mumat39 · 12/03/2013 21:26

I love the whole name!

Just looked it up and Mabel = Loveable
Sukie = lily;rose.

A really good name. Sounds good and love all thE individual and collective meanings.

FriggFRIGGisPoorlySick · 12/03/2013 21:47

Awh thanks Mumat39 it's nice when someone see's the whole picture in the same way Grin

minipie · 12/03/2013 22:05

I love Merryn but Merewen is just a little too Lord of the Rings for me.

mumat39 · 12/03/2013 22:15

Names are funny aren't they? I remember when my cousin named her first born and I remember thinking 'ooh I don't like that at all' but then I met him and it has now become one of my favourite names. I suppose the name doesn't define the person, the person defines the name. The most important thing is that you love the name, which you clearly do. and so do I Grin

It is VERY exciting! Xxxx. So so happy for you. We were rubbish and ended up deciding on a name on the final day to register the birth. We had a short list of 4 and I hated them all when I saw DS. I think it's brilliant that you've so many that you like. Xxx

Rhubarbgarden · 12/03/2013 22:33

I like it very much.
