Adeline - nickname?

We're keen on Adeline Elizabeth - the middle names of our mums - though would ideally want a short version. We already have an 'Attie' in the extended family (nn for Atticus which really gets pronounced Addie) - so thinking maybe 'Adie' - as in 'Sadie'. Though we have an Amy too... Thoughts?

I know an Adeline. She pronounces it Adder-leen rather than Adder-line, and her nn is Addie.

NorbertDentressangle · 24/02/2013 21:13

I know one who is known as Addy.

Is Heidi short for Adeline? I thought it was... I love Heidi

QueenBee245 · 24/02/2013 21:15

Ade as in aid or adey as in A-D

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 24/02/2013 21:16

I know an Adie.

Greensleeves · 24/02/2013 21:17

Addie, Adie, Lili, Linnie, Lina, Della all acceptable IM

Tickledyellow · 24/02/2013 21:23

Actually maybe Heidi is short for Adelaide...!

raisah · 24/02/2013 21:32

Lyn, Lena or Lindy

raisah · 24/02/2013 21:34

Or the obvious, Adele, which is a name in its own right.

nectarini1983 · 24/02/2013 21:51

Why not chose a name you dont want to shorten? Can't see the point giving one name and calling them something else!

badtime · 24/02/2013 22:34

Adele, Della or Lina.

(Heidi is short for Adelheid (an old-fashioned German version of Adelaide) in the book that popularised it. I think there are other German names ending in -heid that it would also have been used for.)

MoppingMummy · 24/02/2013 22:36

I know one who is Addie.

ladymia · 24/02/2013 22:40

It sounds like you are giving your child a name you do not really like just to honour your mums?

siluria · 25/02/2013 09:52

The Adelene I know (she was Adeline on birth cert but her parents changed it to Adelene when she was little) - who is sometimes Addie - goes by Adelene with all her friends/at work, etc etc. It's just close family who shorten it.

Don't see the prob though with shortening names - it happens to loads of people with long names.

Sunnysummer · 28/02/2013 04:44

I know one whose family call her Ada and friends call Del(l).

newbielisa · 28/02/2013 04:50

I know one, she's Ads (adds)

DessieLou · 28/02/2013 05:28

Delly

Pixieonthemoor · 01/03/2013 11:09

I think out of all these options, the pronunciation Aid-dee would be the nicest but not sure how you would spell it....Adey, Adie?
