Is it too much?

Hello! I'm nearly 40 weeks, expecting a boy any time now and still have no name. The only one that both my partner and I like is Zen. What do you think? Is it too much? We would give him a more conventional second name so that if when he's older he doesn't like it he can change it and he won't be embarrassed by his name. But I can't stop thinking, are we being just too hippies? Thanks for the advice xxx

It is very hippyish but then if you are hippies there's nothing wrong with going with that vibe. It's a nice sentiment and has quite a cool sound.

I expect it will raise eyebrows, does that bother you? On the other hand if you live in Glastonbury or Totness there are probably loads of little Zens and it won't stand out at all.

I like it. But I guess I'm a bit hippyish too. It's really no more out there than calling a girl Bliss (which i also love).

Go for it and like you say give a more conventional middle name. (Not Ben tho Wink)

Not keen personally, sounds short for something but if you like it go with it. Maybe just google it to be sure it doesn't have some negative meaning or connotation!
I know a Bliss by the way at DC school.

It is fine.My dn has called her baby Zeke!

I think the problem with a name such as Zen is what if he's not? What if your son is boisterous and full of energy and humour or highly strung or easily upset? Can you imagine kneeling next to a tantruming toddler called Zen Grin?

DangerousMouse · 15/02/2013 20:09

I know a lad called Zennon, it's a great name

MikeOxardAndWellard · 15/02/2013 20:46

I wouldn't. But I'm not a hippy type.

I'd go with dangerousmouse as Zennon sounds more like a real name (www.thinkbabynames.com/meaning/1/Zenon). Could be nn Zen & then he has more of a choice. Zeke or Zane sound similar too.

I love it!

Goodness, my first (admittedly somewhat left-field) thought is - are you Blake's 7 fans?

My husband was desparate for us to incorporate Orac into our ds's name but couldn't agree to him being named after a plastic box covered with LEDs with a sarky voice .

I know a boy (12 ish) who is called Zen. I think his full name is Zenkichi.
