Jonathan nn Jonty

Last week I had a thread in this section which helped whittle our short list down to Reuben and Alexander nn Sacha. Then suddenly I thought of Jonathan known as Jonty.

What do people think? And how does it compare to Reuben and Sacha?

You have to bear in mind that he might well prefer Johnny or Jon as he gets older-as long as you are prepared for that then fine. You have no control after about the age of 6. It is better than Reuben. I like Alexander but only shortened to Alex.

DS3 is Jonathan with nn Jonty, Jonny
or somtimes Jojo - DS1s friend misheard and thought that was his name DS1 thought sounded cool so calls him Jojo most of the time.

I love it and always receive positive comments by everyone. I love how it is a strong solid name that everyone knows but its not super common like Jack, Oliver, William etc.
Reuben is quite nice but I know 2 grown up female Sasha's so Sacha would sound girly to me (even though I know its a boys name).

Why can't he just be Jonathan, which is a lovely name imvho.

I have a Jonathan who everyone calls Jonny. We nearly used Jonty - or at least DH did - when I told everyone it was Jonny and not Jonty there were lots of comments along the lines of " thank goodness for that!"

Sacha is still my favourite but I like Jonathan very much, and Jonty is a sweet nickname. Reuben is awful.

As for nicknames - why can't people just let them develop instead of slapping one on a baby? I have a nickname which arose from the fact that my younger brother couldnt say my full name properly. It's lovely as it has history therefore I'm biased

jonathan is lovely.

Why is it awful? To my mind it's sweet and v jolly. Obv other nicknames may develop over time but in the first years I would want a nickname as Jonathan's a bit of a long name for a tiny baby.

It just does to me. There are names I'm sure you find awful - can you explain why? Jonty to me sounds made up and a bit faux posh iyswim.

I will add - my ds has a similar length name to jonathan (same number of syllables) but we haven't shortened it. Didn't seem too long for a baby.

it's the sort of name i've only ever heard in certain accents and by certain types of people.

"Jonty, Daahhhling! mwah mwah. you must bring Arabella and little Tarquin with you next time. what what"

out of your short list i'd go with alexander (nn sacha)

Jonathan is a lovely name and Jonty or Jon are great nicknames. Jonty is cute for a little boy and Jon can be used when he's older (although -y names seem to be very common these days, even for teenagers).

The more I read about Jonty the more I like it. It's an old English abbreviation of Jonathan which used to be v popular (and not assoc with the upper classes). It fell into disuse except in v posh circles but its roots are very normal.

I have to shorten names, I know many don't like to, I think it stems from the fact that my mother had 100 nicknames for me and only called my full name when really cross!

I love the name Jonathan, and Jonty as a nn is fine - although I'd probably go with Jonny myself.

If you love it, go for it.

Jonty is lovely; my Great Uncle was called that and he certainly wasn't posh- think cloth capped miner hawking up coal dust and saying "Howay lass, ah'm gannin' hyem" etc. Bless him

Alexander also lovely (am biased as it is a family name) but prefer "Alec" rather than "Alex". in our family we had Young Alec, old Alec, Fat Alec etc etc

Reuben brings to mind ferretty looking blokes with crinkled hair and beady little red rimmed eyes but don't let that put you off!

I would go with Alexander shortened to Alex or Xander. Jonathan nice enough but really dont like Jonty - bit precocious sounding to me and maybe a bit twee. Sounds like he should be out playing Polo.
