DayDreaming13 · 28/01/2013 14:17

I am due in March (first child) and we are having trouble agreeing on a girls name.
Our four favourite names so far are:
Cordelia - nn Cordie or Celia
Evelyn - nn Evie
Millicent -nn Millie
Vanessa -nn Nessa
Would really appreciate thoughts on the above four names.
Thank you

Cordelia is lovely.

Evie and Millie are very very common names round here and that would put me off.

Don't like Vanessa at all I'm afraid.

Ruprekt · 28/01/2013 14:19

Cordelia - nn Cordie or Celia - lovely and underused

Evelyn - nn Evie - Evie YES Evelyn - NO Too oldfashioned imho

Millicent -nn Millie LOVE Millicent and Millie

Vanessa -nn Nessa UGH! NOt in the same league as the other names and I have never known a nice Vanessa.

I give you

Ottilie
Cecelie
Romilly
Ophelia

Love Cordelia, Millicent is also nice but Cordelia way outshines the others.

SoggySummer · 28/01/2013 14:23

Millicent is my favourite out of those. Love it and Millie/Milly.

Cordelia - OK dislike Cordie, Celia good
Evelyn - OK Evie is lovely but you cannot always dicatate NN. I know 2 Evelyns and they are Eve and Ev.

Vanessa - like alot but Nessa just conjures up Nessa from Gavin and Stacey.

Millicent gets my vote Smile.

mummybare · 28/01/2013 14:26

Millicent and Evelyn are both lovely, as are the nns.

All of these names are nice OP, out of the 4 of them I haven't met a Cordelia or Vanessa under 35 so nice to have something a little unusual. Initial of either okay with first initial of your surname? There is the Gavin and Stacey connection with Nessa but not everyone would cotton on.

sw11mumofone · 28/01/2013 15:20

Love Cordelia.
Evie and Millie too twee for me and loads around.
Dont like Vanessa at all and have also never met a nice one!

Cordelia the best by a country mile!

SilentMammoth · 28/01/2013 16:37

Cordelia.

BinarySolo · 28/01/2013 16:45

I dislike Cordelia, but mainly because she was a bully in the Margaret Atwood book Cat's Eye. It is the most unusual out of your choices though. I like Millie and Evie but both are popular so it depends on how bothered you are by that.

How about

Amelia
Eleanor
Erica

NowPlayingZone · 28/01/2013 18:05

Not keen if I'm honest. Love cecilia or Cecily though.

DayDreaming13 · 28/01/2013 21:20

Thank you all for your comments - really helpful.
NowPlayingZone your suggestions were on my list but sadly vetoed. Cordelia was the compromise.

Does anyone else have any comments or suggestions?

Our surname starts with L so nothing starting with that please. Thank you.

I was dead set on Evelyn/Evie because my granny was Evelyn. DH said "no, it's far too popular and our next door neighbours have one ". Turns out he was right. Although DD's name is not at all unusual, I am also quite glad that she is not always one of several anywhere we go.

There are also 1000s of Millies about, although usually short for Amelia.

Don't like Vanessa/Nessa (but love Ruth Jones!)

Cordelia - OK. Not sure it really abbreviates to Celia though. Not in "sound", I see how it becomes Celia by leaving out the middle letters.

Lorelei?

BikeRunSki · 28/01/2013 21:29

Sorry, you said no Ls (although what's wrong with double initials?)

Genevieve?

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 28/01/2013 21:41

Francesca
Katrina/Catriona
Amber
Charlotte (takes a chance with one L in the middle)

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/01/2013 21:57

I quite like Vanessa. Only ever known two and both lovely. Nessa is horrible though. Both the ones I knew never shortened theirs.

Evelyn is nice but not Evie.

Cordelia a bit try-hard and Cordie is awful and Celia doesn't work imho.

How about Melissa?
