How popular do you think Arthur will be?

I get the sense that its moving up and I don't want to go for a really popular name, but my father's name was Arthur and we're considering it if DC2 turns out to be a boy.

It's definitely on the rise, is a strong classic name, wide appeal and good nicknames. I'd say it may end up being top 20.

Saying that, I love it and nearly called my DS Arthur (he has another popular-ish name instead)

That was my Dads name

DS is James, I know it's totally popular but it was my Grandad's name therefore very special to me. I originally wanted it in the middle but no other names really stood out so I thought why am I trying to choose something different when I like James?

If you like it and want to call you son Arthur, go for it. Too much worry on here about popularity, popular names are so because they are nice!!

It was my great grandads name and was on my list for boys but we had a DD. As with most names popularity depends on area. I'm a teacher and have never encountered an Arthur.

Could go through the roof if Kate and Wills choose it, 'it's royal after all. Still think it's lovely though.

Bump is going to be Arthur. Also concerned about the possible popularity boom but I can't see it ending up in the top 5 (not least because lots if people still hate it clearly wrong). I'm due a few months before Kate & Wills so will just have to cross my fingers they don't pick it too & send it through the roof!

Hadn't thought about Wills and Kate. Surely it's a name of horrible ill omen for royals? Not so obviously for us mortals . I'd thought of it because of my dad but I do know one other Arthur here and I've seen it discussed quite a bit so wondered if it was taking off as a name.

I'm sure it's either Charles or William's middle name?! Not a royal follower but heard it being discussed and was trying to pick up name tips. I think it's a lovely name,very English to my ear and solid without being boring.

I only knew one Arthur my whole life until this year...in the last 3 weeks 3 of my friends have given birth to baby Arthurs! We had it as our choice for DS1 (am 36 weeks now) but to be honest, the surge in popularity has put us off a bit. Having said that, I think it probably is area specific and also sometimes I do think it really doesn't matter, especially if you have a lovely reason for using the name....

Along with Stanley, it's the name I've heard most on the last two years or so. Oh, and Finlay.

But meant to say, don't let that worry you. DD has an apparently v popular name but we've only ever met 2 others (across two cities) in groups etc over two years! And no one else, ever, with her nn which is always used. Go for it. I love using family names!

I know of a few toddler Arthurs so I think it's on the rise - not quite the new Henry but the new George perhaps.

Yes my dd has an allegedly ubiquitous name but I don't know of any others.

Its a great name, might be popular but traditional strong names like that are never going to sound common. My 3dcs all have traditional names & I have never regretted it.
Imo the more creative names are the ones that sound common.

It is a lovely name, very popular, like Olivia/Ellie/Grace for a girl round these parts.

If our bump is a boy he' 'll be an Arthur, we love it! Don't really mind if it does become more popular, it'll still be an awesome name!

Arthur is a lovely name and calling your son after your father is really special. You shouldn't be too concerned that a name might, possibly become popular; if you like the name what does it matter? Of course there will be other children called Arthur! Basically what I'm saying is the name has a special family connection for you so don't over think it!

Thanks, you're right of course, its not about popularity. Round here there are a mahoooosive amount of Harrys so I think it is about different areas too. Thanks everyone

It's an awful name so doubt it will be that popular.
