Rose or Elizabeth

OK starting to narrow down the choice for DD due in May. Middle name will be Catherine. DS is called George.

My other choice would be Margaret (Meg) but DH is not as keen. He is leaning towards Rose (which was my original favourite) but I am leaning towards Elizabeth.

Your thoughts?

I love Rose. I'm 12+2 so unsure if DD or DS but DD would be Abigail Rose...

emmyloo2 · 17/01/2013 08:32

Scuba - Abigail is lovely.

Rose (Rosie) Catherine, I really like it xx

EnglishGirlApproximately · 17/01/2013 08:36

I love Elizabeth. Ds would have been Elizabeth if he'd been a girl. I think its completely timeless and has so many options for shortening or nicknames if your dd wants to when she's older. Rose was also on my shortlist. You have great taste op :)

CastingNasturtiums · 17/01/2013 14:42

I love both, but to go with brother George I would say Rose - George and Elizabeth together makes me think of kings and queens!

Ulysses · 17/01/2013 14:44

Elizabeth as it is has so many variations.

oldebaglady · 17/01/2013 14:46

ooo really like both! agree that with george it might be too royalistey? So Rose for that reason alone

worldgonecrazy · 17/01/2013 14:53

I like Elizabeth, and I like it when it's shortened to "Beth". Don't like Betty or Liz though.

MrsBungleBear · 17/01/2013 14:54

I like Rose best.

mrs2mic · 17/01/2013 14:54

Elizabeth is pretty

Jac1978 · 17/01/2013 18:11

I like Elizabeth - can be shortened to Beth or Eliza which are also lovely.

sookiesucksvamps · 17/01/2013 18:14

elizabeth is my middle name i prefer it to sarah my first name

JumpingJetFlash · 17/01/2013 18:29

You both have great taste as my dd is Elizabeth Rose :-)

On a practical note, we deliberately chose a shorter middle name to go with the longer first name so that might help your decision???

I also heart Abigail Rose and would have used it if my sis hadnt named her dd Abby

VBisme · 17/01/2013 18:31

I really love Elizabeth Rose......can I petition for Elizabeth Rose Catherine?

ThePigOfHappiness · 17/01/2013 18:33

I love Elizabeth. So many variations and nick names. Rose is nice, but I think Elizabeth has something really special about it :)

TidyDancer · 17/01/2013 18:44

Have all three! Rose Elizabeth Catherine is the nicest way round I think, it flows very sweetly.

All the names are lovely. :)

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 17/01/2013 18:50

I have both these dds names so in my opinion you can't go wrong either way.

Elizabeth outstrips Rose by miles in my book, so I'd definitely choose Elizabeth. It is one of my favourite names.

emmyloo2 · 18/01/2013 03:02

Thanks all. Seems to be a pretty even mix.

Ladytech - why does Elizabeth outstrip Rose? I am leaning towards Elizabeth but I am not sure I can put my finger on why....

Elizabeth is so flexible in terms of nn/shortenings.

I have a one syllable name that you can't shorten, I hated not having the option of a nickname/name for friends to use and a more formal name. I still hanker after a nickname. I would always go with the longer name.

With Rose you've got the options Ro or Rosie and that's it.

With Elizabeth you've got the options of Eliza, Beth, Ellie, Lizzie, Liz, Betty, Lily, Libby, Izzy and, at a push, Nell (and I'm sure there are others).

forgetmenots · 18/01/2013 09:44

Betsy! Love it :)

Though Abigail I love too. Not so keen on Rose as a first name, what about Rosaline, Rosamund or Rosemary?

TessOfTheBaublevilles · 18/01/2013 10:48

I love both, but Elizabeth edges it, again because of the nickname potential.

To add to ZooAnimals list of nicknames, you've also got Betsy, Effie, Buffy, Zizzy, Bet, Bette, Bizzy, Ella, Elle, Elsie, Elsa, Elise, Lisa, Elisa and Lissy (these last six make more sense as nicknames from the Elisabeth spelling, but no reason they can't work for the Z spelling as well).

notso · 18/01/2013 11:00

Rose is beautiful, pretty, classic and suitable for all ages.

Elizabeth is nice but a bit boring and getting very popular again.

However I LOVE Meg so Margaret would be my choice.

TessOfTheBaublevilles · 18/01/2013 11:57

Ooh I didn't see about Margaret.

That would be my choice then, it's the more refreshing choice, and also has great nickname potential.

Jayne266 · 18/01/2013 12:01

I like rose I know someone called Elizabeth and she gets called Betty.
