Dh and me cannot agree on a boys name. He suggested Hector last night. I'm not crazy on it but think it will grow on me as I don't dislike it either.

What do others think of it? I need a bit more conviencing.

I don't have a strong feeling towards it either way, tbh. Its slightly quirky, slightly stuck up, but not disagreeable.

YDdraigGoch · 15/01/2013 14:20

As in Hector's House? No :(

deleted203 · 15/01/2013 14:20

Don't like it, I'm afraid. It reminds me of Hector's House. And it is very posh sounding. It's your child, however.

deleted203 · 15/01/2013 14:21

x post! We are obviously of the same generation!

Shybairns · 15/01/2013 14:24

Very public school. Can you carry it off? Imagining a mix of you and your DH or a copy of your DH would it suit a person like that?

Don't hate it don't love it.

YDdraigGoch · 15/01/2013 14:25

Lol - child in the sixties?

TheDeadlyDonkey · 15/01/2013 14:26

I really like it, but I see I'm the only one so far!

pickledparsnip · 15/01/2013 14:28

I know a 3 year old Hector. I'm not a fan of the name I'm afraid.

SilverBaubles33 · 15/01/2013 14:29

Nope, I love it too, sadly my DH said over his dead body didn't work with our surname.

So what if it's "posh"? It's also classical and NOT HARRY!

ZZZenAgain · 15/01/2013 14:30

don't like it

NAR4 · 15/01/2013 14:37

I think oddly, the fact so many don't like it, actually makes me like it more. I want a name where he will not know anyone else with the same name, but it isn't just odd (like blanket). I love harry, harrison or edward, but find them a bit too overused for my liking.

Never heard of Hector's House. Do I even want to know?

Hector's House was a children's programme in the late sixties/early seventies. Hector is a dog. He lived with a cat called Zaza, and Kiki the frog lived next door.
Kiki used to spy on Zaza and Hector from the top of a ladder against the garden wall, then she used to come over to play via a hole in the wall.

I like Hector. I won't use it though as both ds, myself and one of our dogs all have names starting with H so it seems a bit much! I also like Hollis which was my great grandfather's name but won't use it for the same reason!

Bakingtins · 15/01/2013 17:00

I only know one. Doesn't the "bossy" connotation put you off?

deleted203 · 15/01/2013 17:35

Child of the early 70s at least, YDdraig...Grin. Certainly my immediate thought on someone saying 'Hector' was 'Oooh...Hector's House'.

Lebkuchenlover · 16/01/2013 11:43

The meaning would put me off, sorry. To hector means to bully, to torment and a hector is a bully/tormentor. Not a very nice meaning for your little boy imo!

From Wikipedia:
hec·tor

ˈhektər/Verb
Talk to (someone) in a bullying way.

Synonyms
bully

laptopcomputer · 16/01/2013 11:47

I know a Hector and like it a lot more than I thought I would. I am old enough for Hectors House (so is his mother) but that is not what I think of. He's a sweet boy, so don;t think of "hectoring"

DianaPrince3 · 16/01/2013 11:49

LOVE it!Smile

Frikadellen · 16/01/2013 11:50

I love the name Hector always had wanted it for DS but dh said no

Autumn12 · 16/01/2013 12:00

I think its a cool name but it is very 'marmite', it will evoke strong reactions I think.

evamummy · 16/01/2013 12:14

I think the meaning is so obviously negative (as 'to hector' is used fairly frequently) that it will put many off. I personally couldn't do it to my son.

absentmindeddooooodles · 16/01/2013 12:19

i love the name! would have happily named my son hector.....but dp was not a fan :( ended up being jude instead

JiltedJohnsJulie · 16/01/2013 12:20

I really like it and it was on our list for dc2, and I can remember Hector's House too Smile. I also like the First of the Gang to Die by Morrissey....

NAR4 · 16/01/2013 13:48

Lebkuchenlover that has put me right off. Glad to know now though before we decided to name our baby it.

Need to come up with another name now though. Thanks everyone for your thoughts and any new name suggestions welcome.
