Darrell?

I'm reading Malory Towers (Enid Blyton boarding school book) to my daughter and I also read it as a child. I'm not expecting, or planning to be, but i was thinking that I've always quite liked this name. My 8 year old daughter likes it too. Unlike a lot of the names in the story which are very much the names of people who were children in the 1940s, this name has never dated as I've never known anyone with that name. EB named the character after her second husband Kenneth Darrell Waters. What do people think of it?

I think it's a seriously unatractive name (sorry!)

Makes me think of someone who would be a guest on Maury Povich, along with one of his several baby mamas Laronda or Lawanda, and his brother Tyrell...

atthewelles · 14/01/2013 13:30

I don't think I could ever separate the name from its Malory Towers origins.... and a little girl wandering around in a gym slip and beret saying 'Oh, I say' and 'where's my tuck box'? might look a little odd nowadays

DonderandBlitzen · 14/01/2013 13:31

What is Maury Povich? Is it the French equivalent of Jeremy Kyle? Tyrell is nice. It would go well with my other children Toniesha, Lateisha and Alopecia. Wink

Looks like my daughter and I are alone in liking the name Darrell then!

Lateisha, Toniesha and Darrell would be a GREAT sib set. Maury Povich is the American version of Jeremy Kyle on Sky (I should've said Jerry Springer instead shouldn't I).

Thumbs up for your book choice though. LOVED EB when I was little, especially Mallory Towers and my mum used to read it to me too :-)

Hey! I like Darrell! It's clean and simple.

There's that Kardashian sister called Kendall and (apparently) the Kardashians trendy types - Darrell is of the same mould, is it not, and could be seen as rather chic.

AlexanderS · 14/01/2013 20:47

Sorry, the Kardashians are trendy types.

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 14/01/2013 20:49

I know a man named Darrell. He's jolly nice, but I really can't picture his name on a small girl, much as I love Malory Towers!

cosykins · 14/01/2013 23:01

I think it's pretty cool. I used to LOVE Mallory Towers. I thought lacrosse was a made up game, like quidditch, until went to uni and met people from private schools.

Alisvolatpropiis · 14/01/2013 23:32

I went to school with a girl called Darrell Smile

MidnightMasquerader · 14/01/2013 23:43

I actually quite like it, but only if carried off with aplomb by a very certain time of woman. I'm picturing brunette, whippet thin and unutterably chic.

weegiemum · 15/01/2013 00:09

The only Darrell I've ever met is a 50 year old American man. He's lovely, possibly the most intelligent person I've ever met, but I can't separate the name from him!

DonderandBlitzen · 15/01/2013 13:53

I think there is a lot to be said for a name that would be at home on Jeremy Kyle AND on a little girl wandering around in a gym slip and beret saying 'Oh, I say' and 'where's my tuck box' oh AND on a 50 year old American man. It's nothing if not versatile! I think we are going to go with it for our next Hamster in honour of the Malory Towers books. I too can imagine a rather chic businesswoman with the name by the way.

There's Darryl Hannah, so it has at least once been used as a girl's name! I think it's pretty hideous for either sex I'm afraid, but I do love Malory Towers...

mathanxiety · 15/01/2013 17:41

Oh no, Darrell and Kendall are different -- Kendall is from modern white bread and mayonnaise land while Darrell is definitely straw between the teeth style. And it is dated.

Jasbro · 16/01/2013 18:17

To me living in London I would expect a Darrell to most likely be male and black

mrs2mic · 17/01/2013 14:57

Darrell is lovely!
