I love this name, goddess of springtime -- but would she just get called Prozzie at school?

Well you could use Pina - and that might stick. Mind you, that has its own potential for mockery. But what name doesn't?
Does one pronounce it Pro-serpina - if so, then the Prossie thing is not so apparent.

Prosperpina's the Roman name for Persephone, which is a lot nicer, to be honest.

Why do people feel the need to pick such an obscure name? Kids are merciless, and there are so many cruel jokes that can come from Prosperpina, prozzie included, let alone the fact that she will have a bizarre name which will be mockable in itself. I doubt your daughter will care that Prosperpina was the goddess of springtime when she is getting bullied and called names. Persephone is better.

It looks at first glance like the feminine form of Prospero, which I like.

Why do parents do this? My DS has one of the top 10 boys' names (also top 10 for dogs ), it's never a problem, there are only one or two with the same name at his (large) school and only one other (an adult) in our social circle. Not sure about the dogs.

Genuine question - why do you want that name for your child?

Do you come from a family with a lot of obscure names? Are you wanting to "stand out" in some way? Do you live in an area where obscure names are the done thing?

It is certainly very unusual. I imagine it would be mocked, but by adults, not children. So, she might be safe at primary school, but not secondary.

My DH just heard this and his first thought was processed peas.

I dont like that name particularly but i can certainly understand why you might not want a top ten name for your child!
