its a really nice nickname, maybe for emma louise/emmaline louise/ emily louise. Has a warm, traditional feel to it as i've known a few ladies grandparent/great grandperant age with the name. :-)

Flojobunny · 08/01/2013 22:37

Nay. Too 'cutey' for me. Couldn't imagine a high powered business woman with a name like that.

MoelFammau · 08/01/2013 22:38

My middle name is after my Grandmother - Louise. Not keen on it but thinking I like the sound of Emmylou... Thanks for not pouring cold water on it!

Does everyone need to be a high-powered business woman? I'm in arts and media, as are my friends and family.... Anyway, I'm sure Condolezza Rice was told the same thing!

I was planning to call my son Emmylou Rose. Love it.

BedHog · 09/01/2013 09:24

It says American country singer to me. She might put on some cowboy boots and go dancing with Dolly Parton.

Kveta · 09/01/2013 09:33

it is one of DD's nicknames, I wouldn't use it as a proper name though :)

as bedhog, I immediately thought southern USA and country music

As an adult I would prefer to choose to use Emily (for example) or emmylou, depending on my context. For that reason our dd who is Lucy has alonger name which is her full name, so she can choose when she is older

3smellysocks · 09/01/2013 14:03

Emmeline is nicer/classic. Emmylou sounds quite american diner

3smellysocks · 09/01/2013 14:05

Emmy on it's own is nice though. Emmy Louise?

atthewelles · 09/01/2013 14:40

Country and western singer in a check shirt and leather fringed skirt. Definitely a nay from me.

WorkingtoohardMama · 09/01/2013 14:46

I've got a relative called Emmy Louise, she's at uni at the mo, a very clever girl and its suits her beautifully, she gets called either Emmy or emmylou

LindaMcCartneySausage · 09/01/2013 15:02

Definite nay from me.

As others have said, the only Emmylou I've heard of is Emmylou Harris, the US country music singer.

link to her website

It's also a bit twee and overly girly for me.

Sirzy · 09/01/2013 15:03

Fine as a nickname not I don't like it as a first name

monica77798 · 09/01/2013 16:15

I was also reminded of Emmylou Harris. I would probably say no.

MissyMooandherBeaverofSteel · 09/01/2013 16:18

Sounds like it should be in 'The Waltons'

'Goodnight Emmylou' - 'Goodnight Johnboy'

Cute as a nickname but not as a first name imo.

squoosh · 09/01/2013 16:49

It sounds very Southern US to me.

'Emmylou if I come into that trailer and find you in bed with your cousin Billy Bob Clampett again I'll whup ya'lls butt. Y'hear? Now get out here and eat your grits'

That kind of thing.

AlexanderS · 09/01/2013 16:56
Grin

I love Emmylou BUT I agree it's very American rural South so for me it would have to be a nickname for Emma Louise.

What about Emerson? That'd go nice with your DD's name.

mybootsaremuddy · 09/01/2013 21:02

Another one thinking southern USA here.
Or like she could be a character in an Enid Blyton book.

Emma Louise is lovely though.

Floralnomad · 09/01/2013 21:04

Makes me think of those terrible American child beauty pageants ,sorry.

SirBoobAlot · 09/01/2013 21:07

It's not a real name.

Emma Louise and a nickname, fine. But not as a formal name.

MoelFammau · 10/01/2013 01:34

Fair dos!

anonymosity · 10/01/2013 02:37

Of course its a real name. Emmylou Harris is in fact a US country / western singer (with huge success).

But I would avoid calling a child this in Britain, it doesn't sit well with the conservative mentality of many.
