Have you already got her? Is she a puppy, so hasn't got a proper name yet?

Sienna and Amber are both nice names. They go well together, which obviously isn't important as you're only getting one vizsla!

It really does depend on your dog. I have had four vizslas really in my life- I have owned five, but one male, my only male vizsla, had to be put down just two days before I was meant to take him home due to an unspotted infection, he was PTS. My female dogs were called-

• Sunshine (Sunny usually)

• Molly

• Tizsa (its a Hungarian name prounounced Tissa OR Teazer)

• Isabelline (Isabelline is a tawny kind of colour, a shade of yellowy gold but pale)

From Sienna/Amber, I'm guessing you want a name reflecting the goldeny colour which vizslas usually have, so I'd suggest Isabelline (I called her Issie or Bel- it's important to be able to shorten a name to one you'd use frequently because a one or two syllable word, like Bel/Belle or Issie, is easily recognised compared to a longer, complicated word).

Ginny? A cute name, could be short for Ginger, to reflect the kind of colour vizslas have (obviously the colour is more goldeny, but it's similar in a way).

Meg? As in Nutmeg, kinda for her colour?

Cadmium? For the colour Cadmium, which is very similar to the Vizslas' colour. Caddy maybe for short, or Mia.

Skratta, yes we've got her, she's 10 weeks old now. She's our first vizsla and is gorgeous and bouncy. Am already dreaming about getting a second one! Love your vizslas names. Isabelline is lovely but we know children called Izzy and Bella, so would be too similar to the nicknames you suggest. We've been looking for a vizsla for months now and were set on Amber, but our vizsla is a slightly darker colour so I thought Sienna was more apt. We've been trying that out for a few days but I'm wondering if it has too many syllables as you can't really shorten it? Will be calling her name over and over so want to get it right!

What is a vizsla? Is this some kind of child I've never heard of???

FellatioN, lovely suggestions thanks. Saffron is my friend's horse, Chilli sounds too like my nephew Charlie, same with Luna, too like my nephew Luka. Don't know why but I like Copper and Russet for a male vizsla. A lot of the names we like are either children's friends names or people we know, friends pets etc.

I think Sienna and Amber are both perfect names sound-wise (they don't sound similar to any commands, they are two syllables). I don't think they need shortening really! Although you'll probably find yourself calling her some random nickname as well as her real name.

I know what you mean with them being the names/nicknames of friends or relatives. I never knew how many pets and people we knew with so many different names before we got our first pet and had to find a name! Same for children actually. So many people, and having a name the same or similar doesn't often work. Also, if you call your nephew, your dog might come instead, which presents a lot of problems.

If you like Sienna, try using it on her a few times. When you put food out, say Sienna! And when petting her, etc; and see if she reacts. Does she look up or react? Some words, dogs will react more to. I think its to do with tensions on different words and the rhythm on it, but I know that for some dogs, commands like Come! have to be switched to Back! or something because their dog responds better to that, even with a lot of training. Or something like that.

It will also mean that you can see if she suits it. Does she look like a Sienna? Or an Amber? They're both very pretty and great vizsla names, but do they seriously suit her?

I want another dog now! What's the canine version of feeling broody?

Thanks skratta, really appreciate your post. Some friends have said 'it's just the dog, it doesn't matter too much what you call her'. Maybe true to an extent, but she is OUR dog and it does matter to us. She is responding a little to Sienna because we've used it for the past. I think my doubt (I do love the name) is if it's the right 'colour' to call her. To me she's the exact colour of raw Sienna, but I know 'red' names are very popular for vizslas.

I think it does really depend on your perspective, if you think she looks like that colour, then name her that. For instance, I personally can choose a colour which I think matches my dog's colour. To someone else it looks different but it doesn't matter really because it will be my dog not their dog, and it's the same for you- if you think Sienna as a colour and a name fits, it fits!

'Sienna' is a really beautiful name, it sounds energetic and happy and robust, but also affectionate and pretty.

Rizla? That's what I would call a Vizsla.

I was coming in to post that if you call a child vizsla, people will call it rizla!

Cute looking dog though, Sienna is lovely, but I think 2 syllables is better, so my vote is for Amber.
