DH is convinced this is the name for us. It was his great uncle's name and he really admired his great uncle.

I used to love it but now I'm having doubts. Is it too popular? Too American? Too feminine when shortened? Too religious?

What do people think?

I don't think it is too popular, American, religious or anything. I think it is a very nice name, well known but not over used, and that your DH has a good reason or wanting to use it.

I know two young ones - Benny and Roo. I also had a Reuben bf a long, long time ago, so I am a bit biased. Although I seem to remember he was Ruben.

Cold Comfort Farm!

Alternatives are Seth, Micah or Ada for a girl. Also Flora.

Watch out for the Woodshed.

I just googled Reuben from Cold Comfort Farm Ophelia. I'm not sure that's a great association!

I don't like it. I would assume a Reuben had very religious parents. Or lived on a farm in the American mid-west.

I have one! I love it, it's always been one of my favourite names. I'm not religious, despite him and his twin having biblical names. I've met a couple of others, but he's the only one in his school. I call him Roo or Rooly, but so far none of his friends shorten it.
