That's kind of it really...I love the name Isla but keep hearing that it's become very popular. Any views or alternatives?

DD1 is Isla.

I'm a teacher and wanted a name that I didn't associate with anyone. DD got the final say I would have gone for Miranda

I know of one other, who is several years older and there are no others at nursery. We are in the SW.

I think it's more common in the SE and it has moved to number 11 on the popularity list, so yes, I do think it is fairly common and "of the time".

But do you know what? It is a pretty, traditional yet contemporary name so if you like it don't worry about popularity. It will become YOUR dd's name!

Isla in Scotland is not rare but has a widespread of ages from forties down to tinies so wouldn't date up here. Similar Scottish names ( ie. other islands) would be Iona or Ailsa.

I would expect a Scottish connection if I met an Isla.

Do you remember Isla St Clair from the Generation Game ?

Isla was ninth most popular name in 2012 according to the Bounty email, that I got today.

It's become suddenly very popular - my friend named her DD Isla 3 yrs ago and I'd never come across it (apart from Isla Sinclair) and it was thought unusual, then since then every second girl is called Isla....

I think the current fashion for Isla is because of Isla Fisher, but she has been around ages, so it has been a very slow burn!

I know one Isla and she's a lovely smiley baby :)

I think it is increasing in popularity, but I think that's because it's a bit different, but pretty different not wierd different.

Isla seems to be crazy popular in Scotland. Go for Orla or Otto... As much more unique names.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 06/01/2013 09:06

Orla is top ten in Scotland and Ireland ...
