Surname registering?

I am not sure if this is in the right section or not, couldn't quite figure out where to put it so sorry if it is in the wrong section.

I was wondering when I register my babies name whether I have to put down both our surnames or just my partners? We are engaged but will get married after the little one is born. Is it OK to just put her down as my partner's last name i.e. Miss X Surname or do I have to put mine too?

you can give your child whatever name you want - it could be a made up name if you wanted (there is no law to say what surname they have to have)

You can put his but once you're married you'll need a new birth certificate also he needs to be there when you register her

Spotty why would there be the need for a second post-marriage birth certificate if the baby was already registered at birth with DP's surname??

You reregister following marriage to the natural father because it is a legal requirement. Link to an example of official instructions about this.

FaLaLaLa, You get told that you need to re-register the children as it legitimises them. We got married last year and were told that even though all 3 children have DH's surname and I didn't change my name we were required to re-register their births so they were recorded as children of the marriage.

We didn't. We weren't married when we had them and I don't agree with pretending that we were. I know a lot of other people in our position refuse as well but technically you are supposed to get new birth certificates...

You can out whatever surname you want but if you put his down then once your married you need to reregister your babie

You don't have to put your surname down as well as your DP's. Unless you particularly want to.

Ah, I see. So it's just a load of costly and unnecessary paperwork! The idea of 'legitimising' a child just because his or her parents decide to take a marriage vow is outdated and ridiculous.

I'm with you Spiffy - we won't bother as there's nothing wrong with the fact that DC were born into a stable partnership that continued to be stable!

It's not costly for the parents (free to reregister, standard cost for copies).

It makes little/no practical difference to British citizens in UK, but if you emigrate or are not British, it can make important differences.

I'm with spiffy, & I was also not re-registered at my parents marriage & has caused me no issues.
