Only if it's short for Matilda?

FlaminNoraImPregnantPanda · 11/12/2012 11:18

I love Tilly (short for Matilda), it's such a pretty name, but husband didn't as he associates it with the naughty terrier down the road.

Whyriskit · 11/12/2012 11:20

Love it as a nn for Matilda. Quite common round these parts though.

doublecakeplease · 11/12/2012 11:24

Love it in it's own right as well as a nn. Tilly (not Matilda) Would have been ds' name had he been a girl. I'm jealous! ;-)

Giddyupgumdrop · 11/12/2012 11:33

I have a Matilda but she is called Tilly all the time. There are lots of Matilda's and Tilly's around too so very popular but if you love it...We didn't name our eldest by our favourite name as DH's boss had used it but we really regret it now as there are loads with the name we went for!

meddie · 11/12/2012 16:19

Theres also a swedish girls name Tilda (pronounced teelda) with slight stress on the E sound.

Twinklestarstwinklestars · 11/12/2012 16:21

My niece is Tillie but sil didn't realise it was short for Matilda when my brother chose it, dp always says its a dogs name but it does suit her.

FlaminNoraImPregnantPanda · 11/12/2012 18:32

I think I read that Matilda was the name of the first Queen of England. I was going to use that fact to talk my husband round, except baby decided to be a boy, so probably best not.

Rhubarbgarden · 11/12/2012 20:38

Dd has three little friends called Tilly. It's very popular.

1978andallthat · 12/12/2012 14:21

I know a Tilly whose full name is Natalie.

shoobidoo · 12/12/2012 22:13

There are SO many little Milly/Tilly/Ellies around that I personally find them a little overused. There are so many lovely names to choose from.

SomersetONeil · 13/12/2012 02:08

Yes, Tilly, Millie, Lily, Ellie - there's a whole world of names out there other than these ones, which are so, so popular at the moment, and will date badly.

I mean it's nice enough, but doesn't the work have enough of them at this point?

SomersetONeil · 13/12/2012 02:09

...doesn't the world have enough...

FlourFace · 13/12/2012 02:15

Great if she stays a baby forever.

Stupid name for a woman.

SeeYouSoon · 15/12/2012 12:35

I don't think it's a stupid name for a woman at all, I had a relative called Tilly or till all her life.

Viviennemary · 15/12/2012 12:43

I agree it's a silly name. Unless your a 1920's kitchenmaid. Please don't. I suppose it isn't too bad as a short form. But it sounds really twee.

Greensleeves · 15/12/2012 13:21

could also be short for Ottilie, which is a nice name for an adult?

Leafmould · 15/12/2012 15:45

Hi see you soon, are we related? She is my aunt.

LaurenCaddy · 15/12/2012 15:54

Again, as a dog groomer, i find Tilly to be a yappy little terriers name. I know so many little horrid terrors called Tilly that are mostly spoilt and typical handbag dogs. I know a child and a dog are not the same. But i find it vile. Sorry.

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights · 15/12/2012 15:57

It's lovely - we have a Matilda, Tilly most of the time. She's not a yapping terrier nor a kitchen maid Xmas Grin

SeeYouSoon · 15/12/2012 19:02

Leafmould sadly mine is no longer with us, but was also my aunt Smile

wheresthegin · 15/12/2012 19:06

Well, my dd is Natalie nn Tillie, or Till.
1978... - do you know my dd I wonder????

I thought that Tillie/y was not a name for grown ups as well, but as dd grows up, I always presumed she would revert to Natalie at some stage. But now I think she will always be a Tillie. (dd only 7 by the way!)

Leafmould · 15/12/2012 19:08

I am sorry, see you soon. Flowers

1978andallthat · 15/12/2012 19:36

The Natalie/Tilly I know is in her 20s Wheresthegin.

Leafmould · 15/12/2012 19:45

Where's the gin, different till. Mine is of pre- war vintage.

Once met a German young man called Till.
