Merle (for a girl)?

Not thinking of using it, but just stumbled across it and would be interested in what you think.

I'm in the vein of [[
lovethoseclassicmovies.blogspot.co.uk/2011/05/in-pictures-merle-oberon.html Oberon]] not Haggard

Well you'll be glad to hear that my first thought was Oberon! Grin at Haggard!

I like it. But I love all old-school movie star names Smile

DaySleeper · 07/12/2012 21:39

I don't know that my Oberon link worked, but worth another as she's just so beautiful

love Merle

Alisvolatpropiis · 07/12/2012 21:43

First thing I thought upon reading your title was "Oberon"! I have no idea who the other one is.

It's not my style (I like long names) but there is something about it. Do you have a good surname? Merle Oberon is quite a name!

DaySleeper · 07/12/2012 22:01

It's a bit hypothetical as i think I've maybe possibly hopefully landed on something for DD2 and I could not offer her the kind of compelling surname of which Ms Oberon was able to avail herself. But there is, I think, something about it - even though it's not really my naming style either

It means blackbird in French, if that makes a difference.

Annianni · 08/12/2012 12:08

I know a merle, she's very pretty and is in her 20's.

notnowImreading · 08/12/2012 12:12

Did you know that Merle Oberon's real name was Queenie Thompson? My granny was in her class at school in India and apparently the nuns used to call her 'Quinine Thompson' because she was 'a bitter sort of girl'. Not relevant to your decision of course but love that story and don't know many people who have heard of her. Grin

SparklingSnow · 08/12/2012 12:22

It immediately made me think of Merle from the Walking Dead!

Thumbwitch · 08/12/2012 12:23

I also thought Oberon straight away - nice name.

Notnow - that's a great story!

PrettyPirate · 08/12/2012 13:22

My cousin is called Merle but she's Estonian and it's very common name there. I like the name.

squoosh · 08/12/2012 16:22

I know a little Merle. She's gorgeous, the name has good associations for me.

MolotovCocktail · 08/12/2012 17:40

Another one here who thought of Merle from The Walkig Dead ... erm, a 'no' from me!

AlwaysHoldingOnToStarbug · 08/12/2012 20:07

I like it. I thought of Oberon, though I've never seen any of her films.

FloellaDaVille · 08/12/2012 20:11

I have a merle border collie. It means a grey/blue colour in dogs. He's called Spooky because his eyes are weird colours. Have never heard of it as a girl's name.

ruby22 · 08/12/2012 21:01

I was at school with someone whose little sister was called Merle. Sadly she died suddenly in late teens/early twenties so could never use that name without that association.

ArthurandGeorge · 08/12/2012 21:04

I think it's very pretty.

serin · 08/12/2012 22:35

My first thought was border collie!

SomersetONeil · 09/12/2012 04:42

My first thought was Oberon - it's a lovely name.

HarlettHoHoHoScara · 09/12/2012 04:50

Merle is a coat pattern, not a coat colour You can have red merle, for instance. Not just the more common blue.

However, Merle to me is the violent redneck in the Walking Dead or Haggard. So it's a no from me.

manicinsomniac · 09/12/2012 09:24

It's my cousin's middle name but he's a man. I've never heard it on a girl. Pretty name though.

GlaikitFizzogTheChristmasElf · 09/12/2012 09:38

I know a merle, I've always thought it was a lovely and unusual name. She has issues with people pronouncing it wrong though. Meh-Rhyl rather than merrrrlllllll. Iykwim.

MyLastDuchess · 09/12/2012 15:00

My year 7 teacher's first name was Merle. I like it.

AuntieShirley · 10/12/2012 20:12

I used to work with a Merle. I really like it. She was a really fab woman.
I would us eit but I have a 7 year old Pearl so would be weird Grin

Rhubarbgarden · 10/12/2012 21:40

I know a male one.
