Khadijah or Kadisha?

I am expecting DC3 and if its a girls we would like to name her after her grandma who is called Haddy which comes from the arabic name Khadija.
Well last yr when expecting DS2 (didnt know the sex) I asked for opinions on here about the name Haddy and everyone was against the name and thought it was horrible so I thought if this baby is a girl we could call her either Khadijah or Kadisha after grandma and she could still be named Haddy as a nickname if we wanted.
What do you all think of Haddy? And which do you all prefer Khadijah or Kadisha? (My DH is muslim).

I'd spell her name the traditionally correct way, Khadija. Haddy is a cute nickname, especially if it honours your grandma.

Well I think Haddy is a perfectly fine nickname, and both Khadijah and Kadisha are lovely too, so I think your only problem is chossing which you like best!

I prefer Khadija(h) - I don't think Haddy follows as well from Kadisha (the 'Kh' sound is different from 'K', even if they are usually pronounced the same in English) and the latter reminds me of Katisha from 'The Mikado'*.

  • I acknowledge this may not be a problem for a child unless their school is full of Gilbert & Sullivan fans Grin

I would spell it in the traditional way and Haddy is a cute nickname. It's a lovely thing to honour a grandma.

Of the two I prefer Khadijah as it sounds more muslim and less, I dunno, Keisha/Lateesha/madeupeesha. Juat a vibe here. I know no muslim people at all so to me they do seem very foreign :p

I know one with the nickname Kaddy which is sweet too.

I love "Madeupeesha" by the way, SO UNIQUE!

I prefer Khadija actually. I don't like the extra h on the end.

RamblingRosa · 03/12/2012 12:21

I don't know if it makes any difference to you but Khadijah is a very popular name - around my way at least. There are two in DD's class. Lovely name though. Haddy is sweet too.

Thank you all for your opinions. Will have to see what DH thinks now...althoughit might be DS3 (dont know the sex yet!) so need to start thinking of boys names too!
