Cate/ Catie I like the name but prefer it by miles spelt with C rather than a K. Or is it one of those made up spellings that some MNers seem to dislike so much?!

Well there's Cate Blanchett. To me it looks weird, sorry.

You will be forever correcting people, but if that doesn't bother you then I think it's fine. The head of my dept at uni was Cate.

I like Cate. I don't like Catie, but Caity is a recognised shortening for Caitlin.

I don't like Catie, but then I don't like Katie. It's too little girly for my tastes.

I think Cate is beautiful though - and absolutely an accepted spelling. I also really prefer Catherine to Katherine - C just somehow seems much more elegant and polished; no mean feat considering it's just a letter of the alphabet.

I've seen a few Cate short for Catherines.

Never seen a Catie or Caity though.

I think it's odd when people shorten Catherine to Kate...surely it's Cate? If I wanted to call a girl Kate I'd name her Katherine, but that's just me. :)

The most 'elegant' girl I know is Katherine-with-a-K. She has chosen to be called Kathy. the fact that shes my dd1 has no bearing on this opinion of course it doesnt

I know a Cate, and a Cathy. Never seen Caitie though. Suppose it could also be a short form of Caitlin. I've also come across several Catherines known as Kate or Katy.

Looks weird to me too, especially Catie. Possibly OK as a shortening for Catherine, but definitely not as a name in it's own right.

If you like the spellings go for it. My parents gave me an odd spelling (which is more common now but weird over 30 years ago). People do still spell it wrong. You get over it. It only irritates me when my own family spell it wrong. I mean seriously, we're related, how hard is it to spell my name right? But I digress...

It's so much more common to have non traditional spellings now that dh and dcs often get their names spelt wrong and theirs are standard spellings.

Personally I think Catie is far better than Caytee.

Someone I work with is cate. Short for Catherine. I don't know why you'd be Kate if your name was Catherine.

One of my friends is cate (Catherine too). Sometimes ages called cat.

I know one Kate which.is short for Katherine.

I think.cate is a perfectly acceptable spelling.

Sometimes gets called cat. Not ages.

Cate is fine - I prefer Kate, but that's really only because it was my Great Grandmother's name with the 'K' spelling.

Sorry, but Catie looks odd. Best stick with Katie/Katy, IMHO.

True msbunglebear, if your name is Catherine then Cate makes more sense than Kate.
