Reuben, Arthur, Monty, Daniel or Luke

How would you rank:
Reuben (a family name),
Arthur (love it but US relatives hate it),
Monty (love it but would want a full name on birth cert and Montgomery sounds ccomedy to me),
Daniel (nice but maybe too dull),
Luke (ditto comment on Daniel)?

Oooh
Monty Monty Monty......love it, then possibly Arthur but don't like the rest

Gwennan · 23/11/2012 13:17

I think Monty is fine as a full name but if you don't want to use it and don't like Montgomery, how about Montague?

I love all of your choices so I'm afraid I can't be of much help!

PandaG · 23/11/2012 13:19

Like all of them. Favourite Reuben I think. Arthur as a MN?

gymboywalton · 23/11/2012 13:20

in order of preference

  1. daniel-beautiful name
2.luke reuben monty arthur

i think monty and arthur are horrid sorry

sonniebonnie · 23/11/2012 13:21

I like Reuben and Montgomery/Monty the best. And I really dislike Luke and find Daniel a little dull, sorry.

SurreyWithAFringeOnTop · 23/11/2012 13:23

Love Monty and Arthur - not sure which one first, possibly Monty - would use Montague as full name.

Reuben is ok, Daniel and Luke both terribly dull, sorry.

LaTrucha · 23/11/2012 13:23

I like all of them except Monty. I think Reuben will date the most.

Jojoba1986 · 23/11/2012 13:25

Reuben
Daniel
Luke

I might consider Arthur but I wouldn't go for Monty. Sounds like a pet's name to me, sorry!

artifarti · 23/11/2012 13:35

Arthur is a fab name Smile

Also like Daniel and Monty is great but I wouldn't have the guts to use it. Not so keen on Luke or Reuben but they are okay names.

RosannaBanana · 23/11/2012 13:48

Like them all actually. Maybe just try and get to a final two ( mine would be Arthur and Luke) and see what he looks like? Keeping the longlist up your sleeve too!

Alisvolatpropiis · 23/11/2012 16:57

Arthur! Love Arthur!

Don't like Monty as a standalone name.

Clargo55 · 23/11/2012 17:10

Reuben Arthur is our top boys name atm (both family names).

I think Daniel is also lovely and would probably date better than Reuben.

Monty is nice and a good choice if you want to avoid names that are common/overly popular.

IHeartKingThistle · 23/11/2012 17:11

Reuben.

LouMacca · 23/11/2012 17:15

Daniel
Luke
Arthur
Reuben
Monty

Not keen on the last 3. Daniel is by far the nicest and Luke is ok.

YoullScreamAboutItOneDay · 23/11/2012 17:34

I like Monty (Montgomery or Montague) or Arthur. Reuben is ok.

Luke and Daniel aren't for me but only because I had boys called this in my class (at least one per year) so for me it's very associated with particular people and seems really popular. It's probably not amongst babies born now. They're all Luca and Lucas aren't they?

lakeofshiningwaters · 23/11/2012 17:34

Reuben
Daniel
Arthur
Luke
Monty

Like Daniel better, but Reuben wins because of the family connection.

AlexanderS · 23/11/2012 18:44

Hmm..Reuben is the oldest name on that list - can a classic Old Testament name like that be said to date? Those names come and out of fashion but never go away.

There were three Daniels in my class at school, it is a bit boring and unimaginative, sorry.

Luke is ok but quite popular (number 41 boys name in 2011).

Reuben, Arthur and Monty are all nice and would be my top 3 from that list. I would say Reuben is the "safest" option (least likely to raise eyebrows), followed by Arthur then Monty.

The positions of those on the 2011 name chart are:

Reuben - 74th
Arthur - 68th
Monty - 371st (Montgomery - 464th, Montague - 1342nd).

Daniel was number 14.

MolotovCocktail · 23/11/2012 18:51

Reuben for me, all the way :)

VolumeOfACone · 23/11/2012 18:55

I like Reuben and Monty best.

BonfireBaby · 23/11/2012 19:07

Every other little boy at Centre Parcs recently was called Reuben though it is a lovely name. Monty is cute and I like Daniel.

AlwaysHoldingOnToStarbug · 23/11/2012 22:11

I live Reuben, which I should do as I have one! I also live Monty and Arthur.

I do like Daniel, but it's so very popular.

I'm not keen on Luke, only because most of the ones I've met have been annoying, so it reminds me of them. I do know a couple of nice Lukes, the other ones seem to over ride it!

RTchoke · 24/11/2012 07:27

I'm really interested in the view that Reuben is "of the moment" and will date. I had no idea that it was particularly popular right now as I've never met a little Reuben (this is DC3 so I know quite a few young kids). The Reuben in DH's family was his great uncle who recently died aged 90ish so I see it as a bit of an old man's name. Food for thought.

Last night DH suggested Edgar nn Ned which I quite like as well.

Monty

I know one whose birth certificate name is Mercer.

TidyDancer · 24/11/2012 18:00

Monty is the only one on your list I think is really awful. The rest are quite nice.

Agree with the view that Reuben is becoming more popular, though there are a few different spellings I've seen.

Nicknamegrief · 24/11/2012 18:04

As a military family we know a few Montys and Montgomerys, after the general I presume.

I've got quite used to it now and it does suit all the ones I know (oldest is about 30 and youngest is 9ms).
