It is a VERY popular girls name in Sweden.

Just googled it and its not in the top 100 girls names in Sweden, so not that popular, plus its pronounced Orsa anyway so that's not really a concern.

I know a few Jewish boys called this.

I thought of the Swedish girls' name too.

Um, just because it isn't currently popular for babies, doesn't mean it's not a common name.

My daughter went to nursery with a boy called asa - he was a very handsome popular boy - I think it's a lovely strong name - only ever heard of it as a boys name

I used to have a colleague named Asa (male) I always thought it was a fab name

I think it's got more weight as a boys name....400 BC, and I'm not living in Sweden so I'm not worried about that aspect, but thanks for that info. it's important to take into consideration so many things when picking a name!

Ooh I don't know, I met him over here, friend of a friend sort of thing. I do know he has a brother called Mark. Which struck me as surprising

The Swedish name is not Asa it is Åsa, very different. It is popular but mostly for middle aged/older women.

It was on our list for Ds2 but we didn't get a very favourable response from friends and family. Also Dh works in IT and couldn't quite get his head around calling his son a laptop ( albeit spelt differently)
