I know someone whose daughter and son are called Paris and Troy. Really! Aside from being utter rubbish, I mean, if we are going with mythology Paris is a boy not a girl, and Troy is a place not a person! Its Paris and Hector surely? Or Troy and Mesopotamia?

So can you top that? Go on, I could do with a laugh.

I think many people misunderstand Freakonomics altogether, thinking those correlations in there are now proven fact. Did a lot of damage to debating that book Hmm

My twins middle names are John and Jack. I know technically they're the same same, but they were actually named after different people (and female in Jack's case, so don't think he would have appreciated the full female version of the name!)

YoullScreamAboutItOneDay · 21/11/2012 20:53

Yeah, but you can get away with anything in middle names. It's totally fine Grin

EllenJaneisstillnotmyname · 21/11/2012 20:56

Yeah, I have a Jack (I know, I know, but it wasn't the number 1 name back then and I still genuinely love the name) and another DS whose middle name is John. TBH, all their middle names are family ones and I'd run out of ones I liked. Didn't want Donald or Reginald...

DknyQueen · 21/11/2012 21:20

I hear my ex called his DS Barney.
Is it me or it's a silly name which is probably going to result is lots of teasing at school. Why would anyone call his DS that?

YoullScreamAboutItOneDay · 21/11/2012 21:22

What is wrong with Barney? Not my taste, but perfectly normal name.

PickledFanjoCat · 21/11/2012 21:52

Nothing wrong with barney. Perhaps you don't like it due to its association with your ex.

Heard of a barnaby recently who will be called barney.

skyebluesapphire · 21/11/2012 21:58

See, I hear Barney and think of that damn dinosaur .......

I know siblings whose names all start with J, another family four kids who all start with S.

Thing3WasKissingSanta · 21/11/2012 22:03

FellatioNelson I wanted to call DD3 Tahlia until exMIL started pronouncing it Italia!

PickledFanjoCat · 21/11/2012 22:12

Tahlia is lovely.

FellatioNelson · 22/11/2012 03:39

It should be spelt Thalia, people!!! Like Thomas - the H is silent.

Tahlia is a bastardization that has come about by people not sure how to pronounce it/spell it.

Don't go doing a Rihanna on me please. Wink

goralka · 22/11/2012 08:43

Thalia just reminds me of a plate.
I do not know why.

LilBlondePessimist · 22/11/2012 09:23

I have a good friend (actually dhs best friend), whose slightly eccentric heavy drinking aunt and uncle called all four of their sons George. Unfortunately this is true.

FellatioNelson · 22/11/2012 09:42

A plate? Confused How odd!

DancesWithWoolsEnPointe · 22/11/2012 10:36

I like the name Barnaby. I have a hat called Barnaby. Its my top hat for festivals and other binge drinking events.

FellatioNelson Thalia and Tahlia/Talia might be different names. Thalia is, as we all know, the name of one of the Muses. Ta(h)lia is a Hebrew name which apparently means 'dew from god'.

And while I'm on the subject, some people called Neve are not just misspelled Niamhs. It is sometimes derived from Latin, meaning 'snow'.

FellatioNelson · 22/11/2012 12:27

Oh, ok, fair point. I stand corrected. still get a bit stabby about Rihanna though. Grin

badtime · 22/11/2012 12:38

I don't know if it will make you feel better or worse, but Rihanna might be the Arabic for 'sweet basil' as well as misspelled Rhianna. It's unlikely in most cases, though. I suspect the 'h' would be pronounced if it were...

FellatioNelson · 22/11/2012 12:51

Ok stop now. You are spoiling my lovely sense of outrage by giving me all this reasonable, plausible crap to have to face up to, and I'm not having it.

PickledFanjoCat · 22/11/2012 12:53

That'll teach you, calling me a bastard! Grin

badtime · 22/11/2012 12:57

Sorry, I get a bit of outrage at some names too - like Americans using boys names for girls. Aubrey is currently the main offender, because it is now a popular girl's name in America, and most of them don't even know it is a variant of Oberon/Auberon i.e. the king of the fucking fairies.

Alisvolatpropiis · 22/11/2012 13:01

Can I jump in with Americans using boy names for girls Badtime?!

Bryn is a "girls name" over there. Bryn. And they spell it Brynn Sad

InNeedOfBrandy · 22/11/2012 13:10

Aubrey is probably on trend due to that being Drakes name.

What is the problem having girls names for boys and vice versa? I love courtney for a boy but out of my circle that would get a few raised eyebrows.

Alisvolatpropiis · 22/11/2012 13:12

Courtney was originally a boys name.

I think it's because once boys names start being used on girls they quickly become unusable for boys.

Courtney being a prime example of that. As is Bryn,if you're American.
