Martha? Thoughts please!

We both love the name Martha, but I've had some mixed reactions. Some people telling me it's just too old fashioned, even dowdy. Help! Our son is Ned which we think sounds great with Martha. Our other names are Daisy, Poppy, Betty, Kitty, Matilda and Florence. I'm due in 9 days so all thoughts really appreciated!

Martha is lovely! But then so are your alternatives, with the possible exception of Betty. Smile

Longdistance · 16/10/2012 03:42

It's my middle name, and I love it. I would have called one of my dd's it, but felt strange using my middle name.

SoggyMoggy · 16/10/2012 03:56

Martha's a lovely name.

Kincardine · 16/10/2012 04:15

Martha is a lovely and classic name and I'd have chosen it for one of my daughters if my surname hadn't started with 'M'. Too much alliteration.

Instead we went for Alice and Honor.

armedtotheteeth · 16/10/2012 04:44

I know two little Marthas. I think it's lovely and not at all old-fashioned or dowdy - I'm actually quite surprised people said that. Stick with it!

Anste · 16/10/2012 05:41

Martha is lovely.

SavoyCabbage · 16/10/2012 06:21

I like it but I do think it has a downtrodden/dowdy connotation because of the bible story. It's a bit scullery maid-but so is my dd's name and I don't give a hoot as its 2012.

Bonsoir · 16/10/2012 06:33

Clearly, you like maids' names! Martha isn't the worst of those!

sillymillyb · 16/10/2012 06:54

I love it! In fact love all your names :)

chickydoo · 16/10/2012 06:57

It is quite popular in London.
Ds has 2 Martha's in his class & there are 2 in the class below.
It is quite pretty though.

foofooyeah · 16/10/2012 07:07

Love it.

Ruprekt · 16/10/2012 07:09

I don't mind it but think I find it rather dull and could get bored of it quite easily.

I much prefer Matilda and there are lots of nn you can use with Matilda.

I met a Dulcie the other day which I thought was pretty.

DizzyPurple · 16/10/2012 07:10

I like it. Not too popular which is good.. I only know of one.

COCKadoodledooo · 16/10/2012 08:28

I love it! Doubt my boys would have appreciated being called it though Wink

Actually thought it would go well with all the sibling names you listed and then realised they were other names on your list Blush

Gingerbreadlatte · 16/10/2012 08:31

I really dont like it... cant really explain why just dont.

Kitty and Florence are lovely though I cant see kitty working for an adult....

mamalovesmojitos · 16/10/2012 08:37

Love it.

LadyMargolotta · 16/10/2012 08:41

Love the name Martha. Mara is a lovely name that is similar.

Gwennan · 16/10/2012 09:03

I absolutely love it. Martha is probably my favourite name.

DoodleAlley · 16/10/2012 09:17

I was ambivalent about the name until I met a Martha and I now love it loads. It just works really well as a classic yet modern and unfussy name.

Love it

aimingtobeaperfectionist · 16/10/2012 09:28

I like it. I recently heard of a 'marla' which I thought was pretty. Good luck for 9 days time.

lakeofshiningwaters · 16/10/2012 09:43

I don't like it personally - probably because I've taught 3 Martha's and none were very nice (sorry to the nice Martha's out there).

I would never think of it as dowdy or old-fashioned though - think it's quite popular now isn't it?

KenandDeirdre · 16/10/2012 10:16

Love love love it!

Not so keen on the others on your list though. Martha works well for a child or adult.

smother · 16/10/2012 10:19

Gorgeous name! The only negative is its increasing popularity but that isn't necessarily a problem. Prefer Martha to your other options - it's a bit more substantial (in a good way) and a bit less little girly than names like Daisy and Poppy. Saying that, I've always had a bit of a soft spot for Betty too....

Lavenderhoney · 16/10/2012 10:23

I know a woman called Martha and she hates it... Not helpful really, but she said she always felt so dowdy next to the Alice's:)

flopsy1974 · 16/10/2012 11:30

My daughter is called Martha so I love it. The best name out there. There does seem to be quite a few of them about in pockets of popularity (I.e near where I live lol.) but that isn't a problem to me. It's such a fab name why wouldn't it be popular Wink
I now have the problem that I can't think of a name that I like anywhere near as much for her brother or sister Smile
