what if you dont like any names?

I am 33 weeks pregnant and we dont have a single name we like. With DD I had both choices already picked by now.

We look at name lists and talk about names, but just cannot find any. We have quite similar taste so I suppose thats good.

Some names we like a bit are Erin for a girl and Dylan, Daniel and Olly for a boy.

A girl called Erin was horrible to DD where we used to live. So thats out. I hate the nn Danny so I dont know if I would call a boy Daniel. Dylan I loved but have completely went off. And Olly divides us. I prefer the spelling Ollie. DP hates it. And we cant decide whether to put Oliver on the BC.

:(

Any advice?

We both really like Imogen. And it goes with the surname.

I knew MNetters wisdom would help us :)

I know an Imogen who's called Imo.

seeker · 16/09/2012 19:37

Imogen Louise.

Lovely.

Kveta · 16/09/2012 19:38

Oliver can be Oli too :)

berri · 16/09/2012 19:41

My friend has an Elena - same pronunciation as Eleanor but slightly different spelling may make you feel differently about it?

wannabedomesticgoddess · 16/09/2012 19:48

I think if it was spelt like that I would always pronounce it elaine-a in my head.

Im a tricky one arent I :o

Ethan is a fav of DPs but Im not keen.

I love Noah and have done since the notebook came out. But its so common now. And DP hates it.

Any other boys suggestions along those lines? I think name lists are counter productive. But hearing names on their own with peoples impressions of them is helpful!

Caleb, Joshua, Jacob?

MJandherdog · 16/09/2012 20:09

I know exactly how you feel. I'm expecting no.2 and almost cannot be bothered to think of a name. Dd's name was chosen well before her birh and we oth loved it...maybe sub-consciously this time I'm so dreading the impending nightmare of sleepless nights and pooey nappies that I can't lose myself in pre-natal bliss!

My niece is an Imogen and I think it is such a beautiful and classy name. Her grandpa calls her Immy (cute), we call her Mangopants...don't ask!
I love Erin as it's a feminine but not too girly name.

For a boy I think Oliver is a cracking name...traditional, solid and not a "naughty boy's name"!

charlottery · 16/09/2012 20:57

I'm a Charlotte, my brother was a Dominic, which I always thought went well.
Love Imogen - really nice name

It took us 2 weeks to name dd2 - don't panic!

0percypig0 · 16/09/2012 23:24

I have a sister called Imogen, at school her friends call her emo or immer.
Family call her Imo or Kenneth!

wannabedomesticgoddess · 16/09/2012 23:35

Im dreading it too MJ. DD isnt going to take it well which is going to be a nightmare.

:o @ Kennith!!

Hi ya if you like Erin our DD was Merryn (Cornish) had loads of comments on how lovely it is. My Brother is Daniel and we've never shortened it to Dan or Danny even his school friends didn't and he's in his thirties now.

Good luck in choosing we are 38 + 2 with a yellow bump and can't decide on a blue name at all.

X

ben5 · 17/09/2012 06:44

I love Erin but dh didn't. So if we had a girl it would of been Amy or Jessica. Oliver is lovely and I would put this o his birth cert. It'll then be up to him if he wnts Ollie, Olly. I don't like Dylan. I also like Daniel but hate Danny!! Good luck

Viviennemary · 17/09/2012 08:39

I wasn't so keen on Erin. It's OK though. But Merryn that's really nice. And I know a few younger Daniels and none of them have it shortened to Daniel. The only Daniel I've known to be called Danny is around 70.

Dogsmom · 17/09/2012 09:12

My husbands son is Daniel and it's shortened to Dan, hubbys Dad insists on calling him Daniel the spaniel though which doesn't go down well and has been asked to pack it in but he still says it (yes, very childish for a 70 yr old)

GoldPlatedNineDoors · 17/09/2012 09:21

Imogen is good as long as you promise not to shorten it to "Mo Mo" like someone round my way Grin

I love Oscar, and Dominic. I do like Daniel, and all I know are called Dan. No Dannys.

What about Henry or George?
Also, Caitlin, Alice.

wannabedomesticgoddess · 17/09/2012 09:33

I had a dream years and years ago that I had a daughter called Alice. But I dont really like it enough to use it.

Caitlin is very popular in this area.

Merryn is lovely. I also love Kerryn but as we are from N.I DP reckons it just sounds like Karen being pronounced harshly in our accent :o

I know that Daniel would get shortened to Dan. But in our house that could end up as Stan or anything else that rhymes. You should hear the odd names DP calls the dog. We have an anna banana in the family so I sympathise with the Daniel the spaniel thing.

Mo mo reminds me of the robot in show me show me :o definately wont be shortening it to that!!

Was thinking about this thread last nite...would really help if you said (if you know!) what sort of name you want?

Traditional - George, Henry, Oliver, Louise, Sophie etc...

Trendy - Dylan, Hayden, Ava, Alyssa

Bohemian - Ivy, Iris, Imogen, Erin, Willow

Irish - Caitlin, Ciara, Niamh, Finn, Cole

Surname names?

wannabedomesticgoddess · 17/09/2012 14:03

I would tell you if I knew Jo :o

Some categories make sense. Like surname names or flower names. But beyond that categories dont really make sense because I seem to like names on their individual merits.

For example, Charlotte and Erin. Are they in the same category? Ollie and Daniel?

Its so hard to narrow it down and thats why I posted. We just cant seem to get our heads around this naming business at all. I dont know how I did it the first time.

Though I think it was you that suggested Imogen? Thank you. We really like it. So atleast we have one idea :)

LittlePandaBear · 17/09/2012 19:49

How about Lewis for a boy, similar to Louise which you like for a girl?

My niece is a Charlotte and nephew is Samuel (Sammy) so I think those names go well together too.

Good luck whatever you decide!

jomorgan · 17/09/2012 20:28

I know what you mean about categories cos I like names from all of them!

I guess what I was asking is do you want a name when they will be one of many of the same name or would you prefer something a little less common?

Some ideas...

Boys

Jude
Jonah
Seth
Theo
Luca
Miles
Fraser

Girls

Leonie
Autumn
Lois
Eloise
Robyn
Freya
Seren
Anya
Leila

Let me know what you think! x

wannabedomesticgoddess · 17/09/2012 20:37

I like Seren and Eloise. I think I like more traditional boys names.

In general the names I like are well known but not overly popular. I only knew two Charlottes when I named her. Now they are everywhere!

Boys names are harder I think.

So far our shortlists are Imogen, Seren and Gemma (late night brainstorm last night) for girls. Olly/Oliver or Daniel for boys. But the boys Im not so keen on.

I like Miles, Theo and Luca from your list. DP doesnt.

OP posts:
jomorgan · 17/09/2012 20:50

Aww thats a shame..I love Theo and Luca especially 2!

At least you have some girl options now!

More traditional boys names

Charles (Charlie)
Alexander (Alex), (Xander)
George
William (Will)
Toby
Joseph (Joe)
Harry
Albert (Artie?)
Luke
Jacob
James
Peter
Thomas (Tommy?)
Nial
Jack
David

???

wannabedomesticgoddess · 17/09/2012 20:57

I love Charlie. It was my grandads name.

But my aunt on the other side of the family used it. Plus Charlotte and Charlie :o I laugh because thats a minor detail. Im still a little annoyed at having the name used when she knew it was my absolute fav!

Alex we both like. Toby and Nial I like. DP likes Thomas but thats my other grandads name and he was a bit strange and mean.

Seems we have more diverse tastes than I thought!
