I find Mikey a bit babyish, which is all well and good for a baby but less good for an adult. Mika really sounds like a girls name. What about Mike, then you could call him Mikey when he is little.

Toby is not my favourite either but it's OK.

Good luck.

Have you ever seen Euro Trip? There's a big thing in it because the guys German penpal Mika hits on him, he goes a bit mad thinking he's gay, turns out he is a very beautiful woman and Mika is the German version of Michelle. :o

DD has a male Micha (Myka) in her class. Ethnically he is from one of the Asian countries - not that it makes a difference but clearly it is a male name in their culture!

Ha ha no not seen that....somethin to think about!

Malachi is kind of a similar sounding name. Hebrew in origin I believe.

I looked after an utterly gorgeous little boy called Mika. If have that on my list if I was having a boy.

Mikey is a bit twee, sorry

Badgerina · 09/09/2012 14:47

Don't like Mikey. Unless you choose Michael as his full name.

I really like Micah, pn. My-Kah

tethersend · 09/09/2012 15:01

I like Mikey.

Hyaline · 09/09/2012 16:32

Mika nice if spelt Micah like Badgerina says.

Mickey definitely only okay if Michael is on the bc.

moogs1000 · 09/09/2012 21:03

That's how I meant to pronounce it like my-kah, is this pronunciation still same for German version of Michelle?

I would only use them as nns for Michael.

Michelle is used in Germany but pronounced just a little differently -- there is more of a 'sch' sound in the middle and the E is pronounced like the A in SAY.

Mieke (pr Meek-eh) is a version of Maria iirc.

Lannie33 · 10/09/2012 03:44

I like Mika..also prefer Micah spelling. Mikey is cute for a boy not not great for a 50-year-old lawyer or cop.

When I saw Mika in the thread title I thought that it had a soft 'i'. Micah has a much more obvious 'my' sound to me and sounds more masculine to me (apparently Mika is a girls name in Japan). Mikey is a little boys nn for Michael.
