Hello from Canada! Expecting DD 2 soon (have a boy and a girl already).
Need help narrowing down...please rate my girl names on a scale of 1-10 (10 being best), and tell me if you associate the name with anything (eg. stripper, classy, old-lady, etc). I'm throwing in a few I hate just to see if our our taste in names is similar or not! THANKS!!!!
Amelia
Clara
Hailey
Kaia
Kylie
Lia
Mackenzie
Matilda
Mia
Tabitha

How are you all pronouncing Clara in your heads? Just wondering like. By the way it means egg white in Spanish.

lottiegarbanzo · 09/09/2012 14:48

Clahh-ra not, what, Clare-a?

Narked · 09/09/2012 14:50

Cl - ah - ra

Narked · 09/09/2012 14:52

It means 'clear, bright' in Latin. Spanish is a romance language, so in this case the chicken did come before the egg (white).

Born2bemild · 09/09/2012 14:54

insanityscratching · 09/09/2012 15:09

Kylie 2 pop star
Lia 2 would be a 3 if it was Leah
Mackenzie 0 dreadful, a surname and usually a boy
Matilda 5 not keen but it is popular
Mia 6 nice
Tabitha 2 I see it as a cat's name

Cadmum · 09/09/2012 15:13

Sorry, I ranked rather than rated the names. 1 being least favourite...

Tillyscoutsmum · 09/09/2012 15:16

Love Clara and Matilda. Amelia and Tabitha are okay. Dislike the rest.

strandednomore · 09/09/2012 15:29

I am claire-a and have been called Clahra all my life and bloody hate that name! Haven't met too many pronounced my way.

YouShouldBeDancing · 09/09/2012 16:06

Dont like Mackenzie(too 'Chav') matilda(reminds me of film) tabitha(reminds me of a cat)

SoSoMamanBebe · 09/09/2012 16:21

Clara (Clahra) is only for Christmas babies. . Not really, but I'm trying to preserve it's 200+ place on the popularity list.

manicinsomniac · 09/09/2012 16:45

Amelia - 5. It's ok but I'm not keen on the 'mealy' sound
Clara - 7. Like it
Hailey - 8. I like it a lot and it's not very common now. Would spell Hayley.
Kaia - 6. It's ok
Kylie - 1. Really dislike it. What about Kayley?
Lia - 6. It's ok. Would spell Leah
Mackenzie - 7. Like it. Very American
Matilda - 10. Love it.
Mia - 7. Like it
Tabitha - 5. Not keen.

Amelia - 9, lovely classic name
Clara - 10, ditto
Hailey - 1
Kaia - 2
Kylie - 2
Lia - 4
Mackenzie - 1, I don't get this surnames-as-first names thing, esp not for girls
Matilda - 10, love it
Mia - 5, will date
Tabitha - 7

MadBusLady · 09/09/2012 17:54

Amelia - would be a 9, but massively overused, so downgraded to a 5
Clara - 7, sweet, it is old ladyish but in a nice way
Hailey - 4, I associate it with people in their 20s/30s and I don't think it's a good idea to be a generation "behind" with your name.
Kaia - 1, yuk
Kylie - 1, yuk
Lia - 2, nice sound but on paper it's almost "liar"
Mackenzie - 1, I don't like non-gender specific names
Matilda - 5
Mia - 6, quite cool, doesn't nickname easily (may or may not be a good thing)
Tabitha - 3, cat

Ooh, I'm a right Mandy Misery, aren't I.

Are you going to do a spreadsheet?

Mollydoggerson · 09/09/2012 18:45

Amelia - 5, does it go with your surname. Getting popular, a bit meh.
Clara - 7, does it go with your surname. Getting popular, graceful
Hailey - 1, slightly brash.
Kaia - 1
Kylie - 1
Lia - 6, pleasant and unusual.
Mackenzie - 5
Matilda - 7
Mia - 7
Tabitha - 2 witchey.

natsmum100 · 09/09/2012 20:03

Amelia -10
Clara - 8 if pronounced Cl-ar-a, 10 if pronounced Cl-air-a
Hailey - 1
Kaia -2
Kylie -1
Lia - 3, rising to 7 if spelled Leah
Mackenzie -0
Matilda -7
Mia -8
Tabitha -5 'Tis a cat's name

That was fun!

Sorry to be so negative - we have very different taste in names!

Lannie33 · 10/09/2012 03:19

Thanks so much for all your thoughts!!! Was fun seeing how Brits view these names!!! Name connotations are for sure different over here, as is popularity of names and the usual spelling/pronunciation of names. For example Hailey is by far the most common spelling of this name (although there are all spellings of it around...Hayley, Haley, Hailee, Hayleigh, etc etc etc). And Clara is always pronounced Cl-AIR-a. Cl-AR-a would be thought of as a pretentious way to say it. In terms of popularity, Hailey is #5, Mia is only #17, Leah/Lia is #20 and Amelia is around #35. The names I threw on there that I hate were Mackenzie (very trendy, made up, and #6 on popularity charts), Tabitha (cat or witch to me) and Matilda (not bad but just don't like the sound...too clunky or something). The rest we are actually considering. Was very interesting to see the universal dislike of the name Kylie LOL!!!! In Canada it doesn't have a strong Kylie Minogue or "teen mom" connotation at all, but it probably is a bit on the trendy side here.

lottiegarbanzo · 10/09/2012 07:25

Interesting OP, was there a particular reason for wanting a British perspective?

I think Matilda and Tilly is very English (I do mean English not British), Amelia is too but perhaps travels better and won't be enjoying such a peak of popularity where you are (both these were very unusual here five years ago), so I'd think an interesting choice.

I like Clara (English pronunciation) partly as the sound is unusual. Claire-a is very different, a version of Claire really, fine but not so distinctive.

TenthMuse · 10/09/2012 09:40

Have listed in order of preference:

Tabitha - 10 - beautiful
Clara - 9 - lovely
Matilda - 6
Amelia - 5 - fine, but a bit dull and middle-of-the-road
Lia/Mia - 3 - blah, overdone imo
Hailey/Kaia/Kylie/Mackenzie - 2 really dislike these
