Delilah - Like? Loathe?

Hi all

I'm 35 weeks. DH and I had decided on Layla which I do really like but the name Delilah, that I liked early on keeps coming back to me. It sounds like Layla but is a bit different and can be shortened to Lilah.

My questions are, could the shortened version be spelled Lyla? Is it a diva-ish name? wouldn't actually mind that really

And most importantly, does it just make you think of the Tom Jones song? Will she get 'why, why, why' sung to her all her life?!

DG reckons this is the case but when I reminded him about the very famous 'Layla' song - that shut him up! :)

TIA

I'm afraid I can't help but think of the song (and I do know a primary age Delilah in RL).

I think Layla is less associated with the song simply because there are so many more of them around. That might be true of Delilah one day, but I don't think that day is close yet, partly because of the infelicitous Biblical character.

PeshwariNaan · 05/09/2012 13:46

I don't know the Tom Jones song actually. I think Delilah is a beautiful name. It's getting rather popular too. I have two friends with related names - one Lilah and one Delilah.

PeshwariNaan · 05/09/2012 13:47

Sorry, I meant two friends with BABIES with these names!!

ComradeDaddymanHQ · 05/09/2012 13:48

Sheeeeeee stood there laughing!

Ha ha ha ha!

I like it, it's a great name Grin

Spice17 · 05/09/2012 13:52

Is it an 'evil' name? Silly question I know but I believe the biblical charater wasn't too nice to Sampson.

My mum will bloody hate it as well - she thought Stanley for a boy was ridiculous!

Also, surname rhymes with Pricer, too may i's??

My niece is a Delilah (named after Hey There Delilah). Most people don't sing the Tom Jones song. A lot of people look shocked that she's named after a biblical whore. They seriously get this a lot.

She is known as Lila mostly.

ComradeDaddymanHQ · 05/09/2012 13:56

Nah. No such thing as an evil name. There are evil people and names that become associated with them, but Delilah has had better press in recent years. There's that "hey now Delilah" song for one. Everyone likes that!

And no offence to your mother, but it's not her baby so she doesn't get a vote!

peeriePistoriuslicker · 05/09/2012 13:56

I had a friend who was called Delilah and she rarely told people- she gave her name as Della.
Dahlia maybe?

Spice17 · 05/09/2012 14:01

Thanks for all your responses so far, it's getting close now and I can't wait to meet and name her :)

The thought of people associating it with biblical whore really puts me off but honestly I can see her now being a bit of a bossy little madam (in a cute way) like I was just love it!

Any thoughts on saying nn should be spelt Lyla??

Middle names are Evelyn Grace - do they go?

I like it and would use nicknames Lila or Della.

BumsyClugger · 05/09/2012 14:29

I like it, but my family are all Friends fiends and all that was going through my head was when Ross announced the baby's name as Delilah and Rachel said "Oh great, now she's a biblical whore!". I know that would have been the first thing my DB and DSis would have said.

So now I have a Lyla :) I prefer it spelt Lyla as opposed to Lila, even though that is the 'proper' spelling, as Lila looks like it should be pronounced Leela to me.

Not really helpful sorry Grin

CaptainHetty · 05/09/2012 14:30

I think it's a great name :)

3boysgirlontheway · 05/09/2012 17:07

I love it. DH doesn't, he vetoed it.

WithACherryOnTop · 05/09/2012 18:13

She probably will have that song sung to her all of her life.I have a 'song' name too and it's a pretty regular occurrence, and very annoying.

Personally I don't like it,but love Lyla/Lilah.

Minty82 · 05/09/2012 20:01

It's a gorgeous name, but I personally wouldn't use it because of the biblical one - wouldn't go for Jezebel, Salome, Herod or Judas either; sadly, as they're pretty cool!

Heavensmells · 05/09/2012 20:19

I like it. It's lovely for a baby/little girl. Not sure about it for an adult though.
I love the name Layla. It's lovely.

fanjodisfunction · 05/09/2012 21:25

Love it, and lyla is a great nn.

Secondsop · 05/09/2012 23:02

I think it's a lovely name. She won't get people singing at her half as much as the "Barbara-Ann" that I know.

mrstowers · 06/09/2012 10:32

If you call her Delilah I hope she never lives in the Midlands as every football fan she comes into contact with will sing 'Why, why, why Delilah' to her.

Moominsarescary · 06/09/2012 17:37

Yep what mrstowers says
