Hi all, am loving the name Niamh, but my sister has used it already and so it is out of the question for me Grin

No irish connections in our family, so I'd feel a bit daft using another irish name.

I quite like the names:

Girls:
Adele
Edith
Alexis

Boys:
Solomon
Daniel
Ethan

Can I just gatecrash briefly? For those who have a Niamh, do you find its ok for most people spelling wise in England now?
Its probably our favourite at the moment for DC2 if its a girl, but our surname seems to confuse people with spelling so I dont want to lumber baby with 2 names to spell out all the time.

OP - I also love Maeve, would deinitely be at top o our list but a good friend has used recently.

mrstowers · 08/09/2012 10:32

Please don't consider changing the correct spelling just to apease those who don't know how to spell it. If you spelt it incorrectly you would just confuse those people who do know how to spell it correctly. As the name is now more popular I would imagine that more people are aware of how to spell it properly. I have a pretty usual first name and surname and I still have to spell my name out on many occasions but it doesn't bother me. If you love the name you should use it.

howiwonder · 08/09/2012 10:46

oh i wouldnt change the spelling - my alternative would be to go for another name. we have 2 or 3 that we are toying with...i just wondered how much of an issue it might be/how aware people are of the spelling of niamh now.

PointyDogs · 08/09/2012 22:15

Our Niamh is only 10 weeks, but I've been surprised at how many people had no idea how to pronounce or spell it! Our immediate families were fine, being of Irish descent and familiar with Irish names, but work colleagues and other friends had no idea. We are in the south of England. It isn't a problem though, they only needed telling once!

The one that really surprised me was an Irish lady at the baby clinic who asked how we were spelling it, and said she had never come across the Niamh spelling before, only Neve or Neeve!! The Irish midwife at the hospital actually checked to make sure we were spelling it correctly Smile

howiwonder · 09/09/2012 08:56

Thanks for that Pointy I suppose, as you say, people only need telling once. Always loved the name, who knows - we dont even know what we are having so it might not be a decision we have to make!

AThingInYourLife · 09/09/2012 09:00
