Middle name for Scout

Our beautiful surprise DD arrived on Wednesday (we were convinced she'd be a boy!) and we are trying to decide between names.

I've always loved India, particularly the NN Indie but actually, when I try it out on her, it just doesn't feel right. DH has always wanted Scout which I also really like and feels much better but I'm struggling to come up with a middle name that would suit it.

Scout isn't an absolute definite (I think MIL lives in hope of it being ruled out!) so other ideas would be welcome.

Thanks!

I prefer India

ErikNorseman · 01/09/2012 15:09

Scout? Sorry but that's awful!

Scout is a trendy name and only works with a surname that complements it. Like Smith or Stevens.

fanjodisfunction · 01/09/2012 15:51

Scout india sounds great to me.

I think you need a two or more syllable name.

give her your MIL name as a middle name and she'll love you forever

Stellan · 01/09/2012 17:48

If it were me, I'd name my daughter something more traditional but nickname her Scout.

I think Scout India works well.

Scout is a brilliant name. As you've seen from this thread, some people don't like it but finding a name everybody likes is impossible. Plus, they're confusing personal opinion with fact. I, for example, am bored rigid by threads which read 'Sophie, Charlotte, Emily, which one?' I don't like them in the slightest. But I know that's just my opinion.

I know a Scout and she really, really suits her name. She's feisty and strawberry blonde. Her middle name is Katherine.

Spike I like too. Grin

I would use scout as a nn if you're really keen on it. It not the characters actual name in TKAMB and tbh it's quite harsh sounding

(imagines calling Scout across the supermarket)

MarianForrester · 01/09/2012 19:43

I really like Scout.

But would say not to pick a middle name with a vowel at the start. It may be that she changed her name if she marries, and could be bad. Just a thoughtSmile

Congratulations btw

mrstowers · 01/09/2012 19:47

Does she need to have a middle name?? Surely Scout is a strong enough name to stand on its own? I love India by the way.

milkymocha · 01/09/2012 19:50

I love it!
Scout violet? :)

MrsHelsBels74 · 01/09/2012 19:51

I've read To Kill A Mocking Bird & didn't immediately get the connection, all I could think was 'who's famous with a 'Scout'?'

I think it's quite a harsh name so can't really think of anything that would go with it.

LeChatRouge · 01/09/2012 19:57

I went to school with a Spike and he was and still is very cool.

I really like unusual names (I have a very unusual name myself....more of a word than a name) I really like being unique.

I love the name Scout.....maybe something flowery like Rose or Violet or Lily?

MrsSchadenfreude · 01/09/2012 20:02

I remember seeing a birth announcement in my office rag for a baby called Spike Lionheart. That will take a lot of living up to.

Scout...hmmm...

Badgerina · 01/09/2012 20:06

Nope, he's definitely a human baby. I know it's a marmite name (like Scout) but since the majority of Mumsnet seem to be naming "high court judges" (puke), go figure Grin Grin Grin

MarianForrester · 01/09/2012 20:31

Scout Violet is really nice.

SoupDragon · 01/09/2012 20:36

My cat is called Scout. The other is called Atticus, but that is irrelevant here and we will not mention Dill the dog

If you must use it, I would avoid names ending in T as they just sound harsh and wrong together. Louise seems to flow OK.

But I wouldn't use Scout as a first name for a person

livealoha · 01/09/2012 20:49

Scout India ooh I like ...
Scout Rose yes that works ... Also like
Scout Lilly, Scout Lola,
Scout Imogen Smile

prelim29 · 02/09/2012 09:23

She'll be called sprout at school. please don't. And as for Spike ...............

DoingItForMyself · 02/09/2012 09:40

I love Scout. Think Demi Moore's daughter is Scout LaRue or something - I think a middle name would need to be quite girly and having the emphasis on the 2nd syllable works well.

Don't let the naysayers put you off, its great to have unusual names (2 of my DCs have unusual names, the 3rd was much more popular at the time and I do regret it a bit, even though it suits her)

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 02/09/2012 09:46

I don't like unusual names but people will only be mean about it until the deed is done then they will be polite and after a week or so it just won't seem odd to them at all.

It's a really hard one to find a middle name for though.

Has to be something with a few a syllables I reckon. Like Louisa.

Bluestocking · 02/09/2012 09:49

IMO, Scout is an awful real name but a cute nickname. And it has some unfortunate rhymes - if she's chubby, she'll be Scout the Stout. If she's petulant, she'll be Scout the Pout. I suppose if she grows up to be a ticket scalper she could be Scout the Tout?

pixiestix · 02/09/2012 11:34

Wow, Scout is one of those words that looks reeeeally odd after you've read it 100 times! Grin

I agree with the classical / polysyllable middle name comments.

Scout Elena
Scout Henrietta

Its hard to say without knowing what kind of names you like! Do you have any in mind?

My baby (due in Jan) will have the middle name Scout. I personally think it sounds better as a middle name than a first name. You can always use it as her name, I just think it sounds a bit 'odd' when it has a name following it. I (obviously) love the name though :)
