Boys names help!

I'm 35 weeks and really struggling. Early on we'd come up with plenty of names we both liked, but since finding out it was a boy and since he's been getting more real in my mind, it's harder to imagine a lot of them on a real baby.

Add that to the fact that my husband insisted on telling people the names we were thinking of as if they were a done deal (they never were), despite me begging him to keep them to ourselves as we still weren't sure and I really didn't want people's input, I've been forced to see people's reactions which has put me off the two frontrunners.

Now we're really struggling - he hates most of my names, I hate all of his without exception. So some opinions would be great -

The ones we had agreed on earlier:

  • Victor
  • Vincent
Now I don't feel as though these are suitable and can't explain why, I just can't imagine telling people that's his name without being embarrassed.

I like:

  • Theodore (he hated this so much he has made fun of me for it loudly in front of most of our friends and family any time anyone asked if we had a name, I love it but wish I'd never said it, so humiliated)
  • Tobias
  • Hugo (too posh apparently, but I think it's cute)
  • Maddox
  • Dexter (also completely ruled out, too trendy)
  • Matthias

We really wanted something that won't be the same as everyone in his class, but that's a real and recognisable name. Older names I liked are becoming really popular! Living in the South East I'm also really conscious that I don't want anything too posh, so no Gabriel or Sebastien or anything.

Any thoughts/help would be appreciated!

first off, a big thwack for your DH, what an eejit.

Shame, cos I think Vincent and Victor both great names. But if you'e really gone off them, there's no point me trying to persuade you.

Of your new list Matthias is my favourite of those still in contention. Or how about Quinn or Xavier or Jeremiah.

I've kept very coy about names - am 34 weeks with DS2, spouting lots of "well I chose last time, I guess DP needs to this time, and we haven't got round to discussing it yet", even though I have pretty clear ideas about what I'd like to call the new baby.

What about Hugh rather than Hugo? I think Vincent is really nice though.

Ahh, thanks everyone! I do really like Hugh/Huw, and Hector. Think I might just need to keep pushing my favourites - I've dropped several that he didn't like, like Jonas and Elias, so hopefully he'll agree to one of the ones still on my list.

Your DH is being a bit mean.

What about Patrick?

If you don't want anything too posh, I'd avoid Hector too. As mentioned many times here before, it also has an unfortunate meaning as a verb (to bully or torment). If Gabriel and Sebastian are too posh then I'm afraid so is Tobias. Put Toby on the birth certificate and you'll be fine. They are all lovely names though.

Personally, I'd pick Victor, which I think is a lovely name for a man or baby.

Names you might want to consider, in a broadly similar vein:
Alistair
Arthur
Caleb
Clement
Conrad
Douglas
Ernest
George
Isaac
John
Julian
Malachi
Philip
Reuben
Robert
Robin
Rupert
Sidney
Silas
Stanley
Timothy
