Please tell me the truth: is Alyssa a chavvy name?

We like the name Alyssa. I mentioned it to a friend who said it was one of the worst chavvy names she knows. On a par with Jaden, Brittney, etc.

I know we must choose the name we like but tell me if Alyssa gives you a trashy/common flavour?

Maybe?
I think of it as American rather than chavvy. It has a nice meaning and isn't too common in this country. (I actually quite like it)
If you're concerned, maybe Alisa or Elissa might be better?

Ambrosius · 22/08/2012 11:25

I don't think so :)

Wellthen · 22/08/2012 11:30

Nope, doesnt strike me as chavy. I might have just the one s though.
Your friend sounds rude frankly, I'm assuming you're pregnant? Not a hugely charming thing to say about your possible baby name!

squoosh · 22/08/2012 11:36

I would have said it sounds American Cheerleader-esque.

D0oinMeCleanin · 22/08/2012 11:40

I wanted to call dd2 Alyssa but Dh wouldn't let me, he said it was a made up name Sad

betterthannext · 22/08/2012 11:42

Alicia looks nicer somehow think it is the spelling that makes it not so nice

almapudden · 22/08/2012 11:42

Not necessarily chavvy, but made-up and American, sorry.

airedailleurs · 22/08/2012 11:43

I think spelling it with a "y" makes it look a little chavvy and contrived.. .I have an Italian friend called Alessia, which I think is lovely, what do you think of that name?

HappyJustToBe · 22/08/2012 11:44

My immediate thought was Alyssa Milano who is an American actress so I'd view it as American. It's not my favourite name but not one I'd be wondering why you chose.

Ilovedaintynuts · 22/08/2012 11:46

Yes it does, sorry.

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 22/08/2012 11:47

I love it !!!!

HoratiaWinwood · 22/08/2012 11:52

If you have to ask, the answer is generally yes.

I think the problem is that there are so many kre8ively spelt A/El(l)y/is(s)a(h)s about, not to mention Elise variants and Alesha variants, that even the more reasonable and traditional options look a bit cheap now, which is a real shame.

To be honest, your friend's comment would be enough to put me off a name forever, even if I disagreed with her. Because other people might be thinking it.

MrsJohnDeere · 22/08/2012 12:06

Yes

NeverKnowinglyUnderstood · 22/08/2012 12:11

Alice is a lovely non chavvy alternative.
that said DS2 has an Elissa in his class and it didn't strike me as chavvy at all.

badtime · 22/08/2012 12:25

Or Clarissa, Melissa, Larissa, Maris(s)a.

ThePieSmuggler · 22/08/2012 12:26

Yes, in my opinion it is. Sorry

WopBopALooBop · 22/08/2012 13:49

UltimateDetermination · 22/08/2012 13:52

I think it's chavy, sorry.

ColouringIn · 22/08/2012 13:53

Nope, I like it and think it's a pretty name,

0lympia · 22/08/2012 13:57

I think so.

HiHowAreYou · 22/08/2012 13:59

I wouldn't have thought it was chavvy, no.

SomeTosser · 22/08/2012 13:59

Chavtastic.

nemno · 22/08/2012 14:03

I think it's the spelling that puts me off. Alice, Alicia are fine IMO.

mathanxiety · 22/08/2012 14:23

It is. I will not say the word.
But it is.

mathanxiety · 22/08/2012 14:24

I would put it in the category of Brittany too..
