Please tell me the truth: is Alyssa a chavvy name?

We like the name Alyssa. I mentioned it to a friend who said it was one of the worst chavvy names she knows. On a par with Jaden, Brittney, etc.

I know we must choose the name we like but tell me if Alyssa gives you a trashy/common flavour?

Yes it is.

Alice - beautiful
Alicia - lovely
Alyssa, Aliysha, Elisha etc. horrible.

I'd assume I was a variant of the name Lyssa from the Greek myths. She was a the spirit of mad rage and frenzy.

airedailleurs · 22/08/2012 15:02

Lyssa is very pretty, never heard of it before, not sure that I'd want a dd of mine to evoke the spirit of mad rage and frenzy though!

manicinsomniac · 22/08/2012 15:51

I don't see why? I like it.

There was a thread on Alyssa last week and it was received a hell of a lot more favourably than this. I think you've possibly got the reaction you have because of your title.

Thumbwitch · 22/08/2012 15:57

Quite popular in Australia - I know a couple of them in the under 10 age range.
Don't think of it as "chavvy", nor made up - but not quite my cup of tea.

Melissa also very popular here, in the 30s age range.

Badgerina · 22/08/2012 16:35

Depends on how you're pronouncing it I think:

A-lis-ee-ya or A-liss-a = Both fine.

A-lees-a = Ok.

A-leesh-a = Not fine IMO.

SPsFanjoSponsoredByFemFresh · 22/08/2012 16:36

No and ignore those that day it is. A name can't be chavvy that's just moronic.

mathanxiety · 22/08/2012 16:42

If it is a name used by parents whose other children are Kassidi and Maddisyn then I think it can be seen as a certain sort of name.

CremeEggThief · 22/08/2012 16:48

I like it, although I think of it as American. With that spelling, it should be pronounced A/lissa.

CremeEggThief · 22/08/2012 16:49

Try again: Ah-lissa.

SrirachaGirl · 22/08/2012 16:51

Trailer-park name. Sorry Sad.

newby2 · 22/08/2012 21:09

Don't mean to be hurtful but its a little Jeremy Kyle for me.

trailer park name

These are some of the stupidest things I've seen tbh. I have a name that is a popular name for people appearing on it. So what?

Trailer park name?! It's a name Ffs.

If you like it OP go ahead. I wouldn't ask advice here unless you plan on calling your child "Benedict Edward IV''

ilovesprouts · 22/08/2012 21:24

no chavvy to me at all ,ppl say my sons got a chavvy name but i dont care and i like it ,take no notice i dont .

NewRowSees · 22/08/2012 22:05

The only Alyssa I know is American. She's lovely, but from Jersey, and would admit herself to being the equivalent of 'chavvy'! (but in a good way :) )

louisianablue2000 · 22/08/2012 22:07

With a y yes it is. Alicia is nice though.

ChickensArentEligableForGold · 22/08/2012 22:09

I know several. Lovely kids.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 22/08/2012 22:11

Most definitely ultra Chavvy. You will need her ears piereced aged three months with that name.

dontcallmehon · 22/08/2012 22:12

I like Alicia. Much prettier spelling IMO.

exoticfruits · 22/08/2012 22:17

Alicia or, even better, Alice.

mercibucket · 22/08/2012 22:29

A lot of working class, or should I say, poorer people do use that name or similar, yes, imo so it does not shout out 'middle class live in the suburbs in a detached house' if that's what you're asking.

TuesdayNightClub · 22/08/2012 23:28

No I don't thInk it is at all! Although I prefer the spelling Elissa for a similar sound.

boyfallingoutofthesky · 23/08/2012 07:01

I wouldn't say particularly chavvy, just a bit made up and there are loads of these variant names around (Elisia, Elisa, Alesha) which do not have the classic cache of Alice/Alicia. What about Eliza, that is similar and much more classic/classy?

Badgerina · 23/08/2012 08:04

SPsfanjo I tend to agree with you. The class paranoia that sometimes comes out on MN wrt to naming is laughable sometimes. Its so Hyacinth Bucket, I'd be surprised if there weren't a few more babies called Sheridan Grin

According to MN, the true test of a name's suitability is whether you can imagine it being the name of a high court judge! Hmm

Dream ON Mamas.

nenehooo · 23/08/2012 08:21

A quite posh and rich friend of mine has it as a middle name so I would say no. I like it!
