Please tell me the truth: is Alyssa a chavvy name?

We like the name Alyssa. I mentioned it to a friend who said it was one of the worst chavvy names she knows. On a par with Jaden, Brittney, etc.

I know we must choose the name we like but tell me if Alyssa gives you a trashy/common flavour?

another vote for chavvy, but if it's any consolation I've taught an exceptionally lovely one in my time.

I am Canadian. Here, Alyssa is a very normal, classy name, nothing trashy about it at all.

I know a teenage (girl) Sheridan. Her parents went to see The Snapper before she was born and mistook the Dublin pronunciation of Sharon for Sheridan.

In the US it would go with Heather, Brittany, Maddison, Kayleigh, Kayla, and other names you would expect to find on the cheerleading squad.

I'm Canadian too, Lannie and I totally disagree. It's common for sure, but so are names like Madison, Brianna, Brielle, Jayden, Kayden, Braeden, Kailey etc. You probably know where I'm going with this...

Fair enough if you don't like it but It's so snobby to look down your nose at a child's name.

If you like alyssa then go with it but if you're not sure then there have been good alternatives on this thread.

It isn't a made up name or a name that someone has changed the spelling, it is an actual name. But OP, please bear in mind that you will have to get her ears pierced at 3 months and will be on Jeremy Kyle labelled trailer trash if you use it. What bollocks.

I think it is a lovely name and it was a choice of ours for DD, although we did end up sticking to the name we originally chose which is hugely 'common' (now become no. 1).

Choose the name you like, not what some random people (and your rude friend) think is a 'chav' name.

Obviously you simply must name DD Persephone, Ophelia, Arabella or another posh sounding name to suit many people that are not the parents of your DD.

There is a happy medium though.

It's not really snobbery to point out that some names have negative associations for a lot of people. People judge - they shouldn't but they do.

Thats not what people are saying tough. I think saying that if you name a child Alyssa you must get their ears pierced at 3 months and saying things like trailer trash is completely unnecessary.

They are flowery ways to convey the image the name conjures up for them.

Alyssa is the name of Dido, queen of Carthage, so it is quite fine as a classy name. Avoiding the "y" spelling, you can just use Alissa.
