I'm due in 6 weeks and at the top of our short list we have

Martha for a girl
Theon for a boy (NN could be Theo)

We love Theon but aren't sure if we are a tiny bit mad with it as its quite unusual. It's also a character in Game of Thrones who is a bit naff, but we didn't realise it was in GoT until after we fell in love with it (even though we've watched both series and DH has read one of the books!).

So does mums net hate Theon?

I like Martha & Theo

But not Theon

Just a thought though - there is one Martha in my dd's class and 2 Theo's

Mama1980 · 19/08/2012 07:18

I don't mind theon and like thoo and martha but something to consider is theo and Martha are both very popular-not sure if this bothers you at all- I know 3 theo s and 2 Martha's.

McKayz · 19/08/2012 07:18

Love Theo but not Theon.

Sirzy · 19/08/2012 07:20

I don't like Thon, Theo is much nicer

KosherBacon · 19/08/2012 07:26

Well we only know one Martha and she is 8. It's not exactly top 10 name, it's about 83 in the ONS list, so that doesn't bother me. We did like Matilda but then realised we know 4 people with dogs called Matilda or Tilly and that really put us off it! I also love Edie but DH won't go for that.

We know several Theodores too!

I like Martha and Theo (can't see why you want an 'n' on the end)

Thingymajigs · 19/08/2012 07:39

I like the name Theon. Smile I imagine the GoT names are going to become more popular soon so it won't be too out of place. Tyrion and Arya are bound to leap up the popularity charts.
I haven't heard of any Martha's where we live, so the popularity must be a regional thing. I still consider it to be an older persons name. That being said I do quite like it.

KosherBacon · 19/08/2012 07:39

We like Theon because we like how it sounds when you say it aloud, we like how its a name in its own right, but also can be shortened to something a bit more common. It isnt a made up alternative spelling of a name, it is actually a Greek name that's been around for centuries.

Love Martha, don't like Theon. Sounds like a type of electron or something. Theo is nice though!

HiHowAreYou · 19/08/2012 11:45

It is a bit naff to pick a name from Game of Thrones IMO.

Wildwaterfalls · 19/08/2012 12:28

If you both like it go for Theon! That is all that matters, and I think it is nice to have an uncommon name.

StormGlass · 19/08/2012 12:31

The only Martha I've ever met is in her mid 30's. And I've never met any Theo's.

Martha and Theon are both nice names.

KosherBacon · 19/08/2012 16:49

HiHowAreYou. We didn't pick it because of GOT. We picked it, liked it and afterwards realised it was a character.

HiHowAreYou · 19/08/2012 23:12

But, people will think it's from GOT.

mathanxiety · 20/08/2012 00:08

You will come across as GOT people if you choose it even if you chose it independent of the game. It is too well known from that context.

lljkk · 20/08/2012 00:11

Don't like Theo & not impressed with Theon, either.
What about Thane? Old English for warrior, I think. I went to school with a guy called this, btw. No nn, but some folk prefer that anyway.

threeleftfeet · 20/08/2012 00:14

I really like Theon :)

People are always much nicer about unusual names once they know the actual child and get to know the name as their name IME.

threeleftfeet · 20/08/2012 00:16

Does it really matter about the GoT link?

It's a great series anyway, and not everyone's seen / read them.

CheerfulYank · 23/08/2012 06:51

I like it.

And I'd totally name a kid after a GOT character. Especially if it was one of Peter Dinklage's babies, which I'd happily have with him. :)

needsgirlname · 23/08/2012 12:18

another vote against Theon... sounds like something from science. Or a misspelling. Theo is cute though.

MrsJohnDeere · 23/08/2012 13:40

Love Martha.

Don't like Theo or Theon, but would go for Theo if push came to shove.

Psammead · 23/08/2012 16:13

Really like Theon, but the character is pretty vile. It would put me off.

EdithWeston · 23/08/2012 16:21

In the Greek, it's The Meter Theon who is the mother of the gods.

Are you OK with unisex names?

Psammead · 23/08/2012 16:32

That means that Theon is the plural of god, not that it's a feminine name, I think?
