When I try to research this name on the net, all I get is that it's from the native americans, meaning 'first daughter'. But it's also in my Welsh Names book, although without any meaning or history. What do you think? Does anyone know a Welsh Wynona? Is it an old welsh name? I thought any Y form was male for a start, ie Gwen/ Gwyn.

May be completely barking up the wrong tree here Confused but if it does have welsh heritage, then I love it!

I'm from North Wales. It might be a variant of Wynne which I've heard of as meaning pure or fair. I know a woman named Wynne who is Welsh, as well as someone named Guinevere which means the same and is also Welsh. It's a pretty name. Men can have the name Winona, I met a man with that name- although he's trying to change it. It must be old Welsh because that certainly isn't the word for pure or fair today.

I'm from South Wales, and have never heard the name in a Welsh context.

Another South Walian who has never heard of that name at all - let alone as a Welsh name!

It's not a Welsh name. Beware of the Welsh name books and websites- they are full of crap. Which one have you got?
I do know a Gweniona, that's quite similar and prettier IMO.

It's not Welsh, and not medieval Welsh either.
I know an Anona, but not sure of the origin.
Wynona doesn't really seem very Welsh apart from the tenuous link with Wyn/Gwyn.
Wyn is basically the masculine form (the girl's name Gwyneth is a grammatical mistake in Welsh but a well established one!), and the feminine ones tend to be Gwen, Gwenno, Gwenan, Gwenllian etc. IawnCont's Gweniona is lovely and feminine.
