Well, I was always under the impression that it was a bit 'chavvy', but have since taught a Caitlin and a Katelyn, both of whom were lovely and not remotely chavvy. A close friend also recently called her dd Caitlin, and she and her dh are both from very educated, upper middle-class backgrounds.

Guess it just goes to show how inaccurate stereotypes can be!

I loved Caitlin last time around but was put off by someone who said they thought it was a 'chavvy' name. Then I heard a woman screaming the name across a crowded play barn and was completely put off.

It was very popular about 6-8 years ago and has declined considerably since, so it's certainly not as common as it was but whether that also means it isn't 'common' I'm not sure.

My dd is Amelia caitlyn, very annoyed that Amelia is how no.1 mind as it was out of top ten when we uses it!
Was going to have caitlyn as first name but have a sister with very similar!
I think it's very cute and can be shortened to Katie which is also lovely :-)

I love the name, but an Irish friend told me the correct pronunciation is "Catlin"?

Haylebop12 · 16/08/2012 17:58

It probably is. My ban insists she is Kat-a-Lin!

muststopeatingchocolate · 16/08/2012 19:55

I don't think it's chavvy, but then I'm not very impartial as have 3yr old DD who's Caitlin Iris. I think if you did pronounce it correctly it should be Catch Leen. I read somewhere that the anglicised version is Kathleen.

I know a couple of other Caitlins as well and parents are not at all chavvy!

melliebobs · 16/08/2012 19:59

Aww there's a Caitlin at 2 of my baby groups m she is just gorgeous. Not chavvi at all IMO

DarrowbyEightFive · 16/08/2012 20:08

DH's family around Dublin pronounce it Cautch-leen, but with a very soft ch sound which is almost a sh.

It's DD1's middle name, but she's 14 so perhaps we were at the vanguard of the Caitlin trend. I don't think we're chavvy at all...

PipJoy · 17/08/2012 07:54

hello - certainly dont mean to suggest that it is - so sorry - didnt think that through when I posted!

I love it, it was just somebody in the office said it, somebody else said it sounded very american...?

I honestly think its beautiful and just wanted to check whether I was missing something! I dont think I am, I think it's a top name!
