We are expecting a dd in the next few weeks but we just need to get the name sorted... stress of name is enough to bring on labour in itself. We like unusual names but they can be a bit marmity and we don't want to burden the poor little thing. Ideally something timeless, not obviously shortened, elegant. Which do you like or hate of..?

Romily
Verity
Serena
Selina
Xanthe
Nancy
Lydia
Beatrice
Cynthia
Fleur
Rowena

Love them all but Beatrice, sorry to say it sounds like the name of a stocky, large girl for some reason to me.

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 26/08/2012 17:44

Love Xanthe and Beatrice, both on our list for DD

Not keen on any of the others (especially not nancy or verity)

SomebodySaveMe · 26/08/2012 17:45

Romily

lottiegarbanzo · 26/08/2012 21:48

Romily - like
Verity - ok
Serena - like (think serenity)
Selina - dislike (think semolina)
Xanthe - like
Nancy - ok but much brassier and less pretty than the others
Lydia - for some reason I really dislike this
Beatrice - love, nothing like as popular as you'd think from here
Cynthia - dislike (think Cynthia Payne and sickly floral air freshener), how about Cecilia?
Fleur - ok but sounds like bleurgh
Rowena - like but very sensible head-girly

Thank you for all your contributions. Serena Elizabeth arrived safely on Monday. True to her name she seems to be fairly chilled.

Congrats and enjoy your newbie cuddles! Lovely to hear an update on name choice - big thumbs up - beautiful name Smile

Great shortlist.

My favourite is probably Verity followed by Romily and Lydia. The only ones I don't like are Cynthia and Xanthe.

Nancy is cute but not elegant.

Rowena is lovely I also like Ramona.

I was also thinking Beatrice is too popular to be unusual however it was 126th most popular girls name in 2011 with only 460 girls called this, hardly super popular. In fact there were more Lydias last year.

nickelcognito · 14/09/2012 16:41

sorry about your DD.

i know a Romily.

i like these ones:

Verity
Xanthe
Nancy
Beatrice
Rowena

Duh! That'll teach me not to read the thread properly!

nickelcognito · 14/09/2012 17:23

oops.
i did exactly what YesIKnow did Blush

I read all the updates, just missed the very important one at the end!

Serena Elizabeth is beautiful - the two names together sound very elegant and grown-up (life-long names I mean)

congratulations :)

AgathaTrunchbull · 14/09/2012 19:58

Romily - not one I would choose, but okay.
Verity - middle-aged organiser of tarts and vicars parties.
Serena - okay, but quite commonplace.
Selina - not so keen. Don't like the 'l' sound in the middle.
Xanthe - Lovely and X as an initial is cool. Does mean 'yellow', though.
Nancy - always sounds like it should be short for something. Dickens.
Lydia - Nice, very Austen. Does make me think of an area of ancient Turkey, but probably won't do the same to most people.
Beatrice - Yep, nice enough.
Cynthia - Still a bit middle-aged.
Fleur - Bleugh.
Rowena - Different, certainly.

AgathaTrunchbull · 14/09/2012 19:59

Oo, me too! Congratulations. Lovely middle name.
